On-again, off-again relationships: Worth it?

It can be hard to know when it’s over, especially if your relationship is an emotional roller coaster. No matter how much you think things might change, one thing is always true: There’s a reason it didn’t work out the first time. Be honest with yourself. It might be time to put your foot down.

Some relationships require a little more fight than others. That’s fine, as long as you know it’s worth it at the end of the day. If you’re having doubts about your relationship, step back and take a critical look. Here are five indicators that tell you it’s time to move on.

It’s not fun anymore

Does hanging out with your partner feel like more of a chore than a joy? The point of relationships is that they enrich our lives and help us grow as individuals. When they don’t do that, they’re not good for us. It’s unrealistic to expect them to be great all the time, but it’s important that you know you can count on him whenever you need him. The need for fun and de-stressing is just as important as having a shoulder to cry on.

It works only for him

Seeing him only on his terms can make you feel undervalued as well as mess with your head. Arranging your life around someone else’s whims is exhausting; no one deserves to do that. It has to be a two-way street. If you’re not getting what you want out of your relationship as it exists right now, then it’s not working. If you’re not happy with the way things are, then jet. Don’t bank on things changing in a month or a year. That’s a huge waste of time. Life is now. Get out there, and find someone who can’t wait to hear from you.

He’s manipulative

If he tries to make you stay by guilting you or threatening you in any way, you have to bolt. This relationship is a dead end, and you’ll just keep walking around in circles, getting nowhere. Listen to what that niggling feeling deep down is telling you — it’s there for a reason. Is it telling you you’re stifled? Ask yourself why you feel compelled to go back to him. If the reasons are anything other than the fact that you love him and want to be with him, they’re not good enough. You aren’t responsible for his — or anyone’s, for that matter — happiness. Besides, neediness is so not sexy.

He’s the easy choice

Doubting that Mr. Right is out there with each passing day? The same old, same old starts looking a little better when you feel this way. But you know you’re lying to yourself. You should always feel excited to hang with your partner. It’s not that you should always have butterflies, but there should always be new dimensions of your relationship you’re excited to explore. Even though it might not seem this way, it’s better to be alone than unhappy. Plus, wasting your energy (even if it’s not much) on a partner you’re not 100 per cent into distracts you from finding love — and not just in the form of a guy, but real love in all shapes and forms.
