When you were in your early 20s, you could wear anything and get away with it. You had the figure and the freedom of self-expression on your side, and you might not have had a job requiring a dress code. That said, after 30, the fashion floor is still wide open. We provide key tips and pieces to dress your age, whether you’re 30, 40 or over 50.
Age-appropriate style through the decades
When you were in your early 20s, you could wear anything and get away with it. You had the figure and the freedom of self-expression on your side, and you might not have had a job requiring a dress code. That said, after 30, the fashion floor is still wide open. We provide key tips and pieces to dress your age, whether you’re 30, 40 or over 50.
How do we pull off the delicate balance of dressing our age while at the same time showing our youthful spirits?
The good news is that formerly rigid rules about these things have been relaxed, and shopping centres and boutiques give us more style at more price points than we’ve had previously. Plus, age itself is changing. As women proudly declare that 40 is the new 30, our only limitations appear to be our confidence and imaginations. Then again, as we age, we also attain a certain level of success and esteem, and that can dictate some different style choices. SheKnows is here to help be your stylist for timeless fashion at any age over the big 3-0.
Your 30s
In some ways your 30s should not be that different from the glory days of your 20s — save one thing: Avoid anything overly trendy, including the “grungier” styles that are coming back into vogue. That said, if your curves are kicking, show them off. Don’t shy away from minis and the retro-style halters that are all the rage this season. Just cover up with the class and style we’ve come to expect from women in their 30s. Our tip? Embrace a good jacket. Whether a blazer or outerwear, experiment with sumptuous fabrics (like faux leather), patterns and innovative cuts. Have a few — they can make an outfit and tell the world to take you seriously. Head to Topshop in Hudson’s Bay, or shop online for on-trend pieces. With white being hot right now, we love the modern tapering of this jacket (thebay.com, $72).

Your 40s
In many ways your 40s should be your best decade. You’re confident, successful, and you know what you like. Use this time to load up on some statement pieces that show you’re not to be messed with. Spring/summer 2013 is full of them. Start with patterned pants (jcrew.com, $170) — a go-to for fashionable, modern women in charge. Pair them with an eye-popping power heel, and make your mark.

Your 50s and over
In theory, you should have the most money to spend on yourself right now, so use some expendable cash to load up on some investment pieces. Remember a few rules. The first is that cut is crucial. Cast your refined eye on tailoring, and make sure it’s top of the line. Also, while we don’t suggest a wardrobe of understated neutrals, we would be conscious of a more constrained palette. But this is not the time in your life for the on-trend neons. On a similar note, use patterns selectively. Consider scarves to add some colour. This printed scarf ($79.50) from Club Monaco has a modern contrasting palette while keeping it classy and effortlessly chic.
A few more tips
Regardless of your age, always remember that accessories are your friends. Statement necklaces are all the rage right now. Women in their 30s in particular can rock pieces that feature bright, neon colours and futuristic designs. This beauty by Banana Republic ($74) makes a statement for women at any age and comes in a variety of fun colors.
Purses can be quite an investment but often a worthwhile one. As you get older, look to classic, well-made styles in a conservative palette of black, brown, burgundy or luggage colour. Save colour, pattern and embellishment for clutches.
Finally, always have a professional bra fitting. Style looks best when the foundation is secure!
