A Florida teen was caught impersonating a gynecologist inside a real medical facility for weeks. Though he never had any contact with patients, according to the hospital, it is a disturbing case that ended up with the teen in handcuffs and a number of people completely spooked and creeped out. Who could blame them?
The teen’s mother claims that he has some kind of mental disorder and had gone off his meds before he put on a coat and walked the halls of Saint Mary’s Medical Center in West Palm Beach. Although they say he didn’t get a chance to examine patients, the assumption is that was his goal. When he was arrested, he was in the exam room with a patient.
Terrifying doesn’t even begin to cover it. Even security guards had seen him and thought he belonged.
As women, it is bad enough to have to go to the gynecologist, but to think that someone could be faking it to get his kicks? Well shudder to that. This is why I have only seen female OB-GYNs and will continue to do so. OK, so it’s not the only reason. Because let’s face it, this is a relatively unlikely scenario. But it is a reason.
There is always the slight fear that a man went into the profession for the kicks or that he has no idea what he is doing because he doesn’t have female parts. Sorry, but it’s true. Give me a female any day. A female knows what we feel like and has the knowledge to be sensitive and empathize with whatever we are going through.
I know some women feel differently, but it seems crazy and this is one more reason. I feel badly for the boy and for his mother since it sounds like he has issues, but it’s a terrifying truth about women’s health. We need more women doctors so that we can see them exclusively. There is no way I would trust my most intimate parts in the hands of a person who doesn’t have the same parts.
