There’s nothing worse than being sick after the busy festive season. What can you do about that persistent sore throat? Here are a few simple solutions to get some relief.
Honey-infused garlic cloves
Symptom: First sign of a sore throat
How it soothes: Despite how it sounds, this combination actually works. Garlic is a great immunity booster while honey has fantastic antibacterial, antiviral and anti-fungal properties. When the two are combined they create an ultimate sore throat solution. The honey helps make the raw garlic more palatable.
Serving size 1 jar or approximately 26 cloves
Ingredients:
- 3 garlic bulbs, separated and peeled
- 1 jar of raw honey (Manuka is a great choice)
Directions:
- Take an empty sterilised jar and fill it with the garlic cloves. Slowly pour the honey over the cloves until they are completely covered. Seal the jar.
- Set the jar aside and allow the cloves to infuse for at least a week before using. They will keep in the fridge for up to a year.
Warm salt water
Symptoms: Sore and scratchy throat
How it soothes: When it comes to that irritating scratchy throat, this tried and tested home remedy cannot be beaten. Gargling warm saltwater helps reduce swelling and relieves discomfort.
Humidifier
Symptom: Dry sore throat and tight chest
How it soothes: Humidifiers increase the moisture in the air. While central heating is great, it dries out our mucous membranes and often leaves us feeling uncomfortable.
Herbal tea
Symptoms: Persistent pain and dehydration
How it soothes: In order to soothe your throat and prevent dehydration, herbal teas contain different immunity-boosting properties. Some may contain mucilage, which coats the mucous membranes and helps with the healing process. Other herbal teas, such as those made with liquorice and ribwort plantain, may exhibit more anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties.
