5 Fancy Valentine’s Day gifts we would get if we were super rich

If money was no object how would you spend Valentine’s Day? Let’s forget all about the bank balance and spend the next few minutes fantasising.

Yes, yes, we know money doesn’t buy love. Or happiness. Or any of the really important stuff in life. But there are some times when it would be nice just to be able to splash the cash and do all the things we can only dream of, like on Valentine’s Day. Here are a few things we’d start with…

1. Hire a plane to write a romantic message in the sky.

Yes, lots of people think it’s cheesy. These are probably all people who don’t have enough money to hire a plane to write a romantic message in the sky. And hey, who cares about being cheesy when you’re rich enough to do stuff like this?

2. Book a romantic holiday

Forget a trip to your local cinema or even the best restaurant in town. If money really is no object, why not take the lovers’ trip of a lifetime? Visit all the most romantic cities in the world — Rome, Paris, Venice, Verona — and post loads of loved-up snaps on Instagram to make everybody at home super jealous, because we all know that’s part of the fun.

3. Hire a cinema

Your local cinema is guaranteed to have a romantic flick or two screening over Valentine’s Day weekend. But that’s not good enough when you’re loaded. Much better to hire a cinema and watch all your favourite romantic movies, back to back. With an unlimited supply of the finest champagne and chocolates for your movie snacks, of course.

4. Give some ridiculously expensive gifts

Hermès Porosus Crocodile Birkin bag, price upon request to esteemed Hermès customers (available pre-owned at Covetique for £55,000); No1 Passant Guardant, created by parfumier Clive Christian, OBE, covered in 24 carat gold and encrusted in diamonds, only available in Harrods’ Salon de Perfume (£143,000); Personalised Vacheron Constantin Quai de L’Ile Watch (up to £40,000).

It would be ridiculous not to go on a huge Valentine’s Day shopping spree if you have loads and loads of money. Fancy a new handbag? Perfume? A swanky watch? These beauties are the crème de la crème.

5. Buy an island

While you’re in a spending frame of mind, why not really push the boat out and treat yourself and your beloved to a new romantic hideaway? For 45 million Euros you could buy a luxury two-storey, eight-bed, eight-bath penthouse in Paris overlooking the Eiffel Tower. If you can stretch your budget by another 5 million Euros, you could be the proud owner of the “world’s largest penthouse“: 39,000 square feet of fabulousness in Puntarenas, Costa Rica. Perhaps an island is more your thing? (If it’s good enough for Richard Branson…) From the 110-acre tropical Rangyai Island in Thailand (£103 million) to the far more affordable and superbly named Little Ragged Island in the Bahamas (£22 million), buying someone an island has to be the best Valentine’s Day gift ever.
