Breast cancer charity CoppaFeel! appoint Sheridan Smith as new patron

Leading breast cancer awareness charity CoppaFeel! has appointed actress Sheridan Smith as their new patron — and they couldn’t have made a better choice.

“We’re so excited to finally announce that actress and national treasure Sheridan Smith has agreed to join the Boob Team as our patron!” CoppaFeel! announced on their website this week.

The news couldn’t come at a more appropriate time as Sheridan appears on our screens on Sunday evening in the BBC drama The C Word. She plays writer Lisa Lynch, who died of breast cancer in 2013, and it was on the set that she met CoppaFeel! founder Kris Hallenga, who plays herself in the film.

Kris, who was diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer at the age of 23, struck up a friendship with Lisa that began online and soon transferred to real life. So it seems somewhat serendipitous that Kris and Sheridan met on Lisa’s project, are now friends themselves and are working together to raise awareness of breast cancer and spread the word about the importance of regular breast checks.

“I’m really excited about being a patron for CoppaFeel!” said Sheridan. “I love my boobs and check them regularly and now I get to ensure everyone else does too. Playing the amazing Lisa Lynch in The C Word opened my eyes to the realities of having breast cancer. Everyone should stand the best chance of surviving this crappy disease so I am a fully fledged boob team member and here to remind you to get to know your boobs. So, off you go!”

On her personal Tumblr page Kris revealed how pleased she was to have Sheridan as her charity’s patron: “Everyone at CoppaFeel! is so excited to have her on board. With her help we can ensure more women, and blokes, check themselves regularly, know their boobs and have the confidence to go get anything abnormal checked out. Everyone should have the best possible chance to beat breast cancer.”
