French company Spinali has launched its bikini connecté (“connected bikini”) which is designed to let you know when it’s time to get out of the sun or apply more sunscreen.
The two-piece has an embeddable sensor which monitors the temperature while you’re out in the sun. To personalise the bikini the user uses a smartphone app to select their skin type. The sensor uses this information to send an alert to the smartphone when it thinks it’s time to cover up.
Spinali Design is based in Mulhouse in eastern France. Head of the company Marie Spinali revealed that the idea came about following “an off-the-cuff remark after seeing people looking like lobsters still in the sun,” reported The Telegraph.

The bikini is available to buy from the Spinali website (prices start from £108) and can be custom made according to the buyer’s requirements. The sensor can be attached to a small clasp at the front of the bikini and it’s waterproof so there’s no need to remove it when in the sea or swimming pool.
A beach towel with the same technology is also available for £72 and later this month Spinali is launching a child’s swimsuit with sensor that also warns parents and guardians when a child is more than 50 metres away.
