Woman buys coffee for the women who mocked her appearance

Mean girls are everywhere, and the truth is, when they grow up, they often become mean women. We all have dealt with them, but one Michigan mom decided to deal with them in a whole new way. And it changes everything.

A Michigan mother was in line to buy coffee behind two women last week when two women behind her started to mock her. They said her roots were showing and called her a whale.

Dianne Hoffmeyer was just trying to buy donut holes and coffee with her 22-month-old when the women attacked. The cruelty was shocking. It would have been easy to spin around and tell those women what miserable, awful people they are. But she didn’t. What she did instead shocked everyone, see below:

Hoffmeyer says she had a moment where she wondered what to do and she chose to buy those women coffee. Not because they deserved it, mind you, but because she felt putting kindness into the world was a better idea than spreading their hate. Especially for her child.

It was a kind of amazing gesture. How many of us would have done the same?

It was a timely message for me, especially. Of late, I have felt really disconnected from a sense of community and very angry at the people around me who are inconsiderate, rude, selfish, or pre-occupied with themselves. I have often felt this sense of low level rage that could explode at any moment.

Had I been in Starbucks and been spoken to in that way, I would have lost myself and screamed at those people. But what kind of lesson does that send? Kindness is the better lesson. After all, the people who need love the most ask for it in the most unloving ways. Or so I am told. No one would be that mean to another person unless they had someone be mean to them in the past. True story.

So the next time someone does something that makes me irate, I will think of Hoffmeyer, take some breaths, and be kind. It’s a healthier way of existing.
