Whether or not you believe in the power of the universe, there is plenty of evidence on the effects of positive thinking.
There was an entire book and movie dedicated to this practice, The Secret, and it literally affected the way millions of people saw their life and how to attain the things they desire. Your thoughts become things and experiences — good or bad. Unfortunately, many people dwell in negative thoughts, thus attracting a life that is far from the beaches and umbrella drinks they desire.
Think about how many times a day you think of something you don’t want. Bills that need to be paid, debt you want to get out of, having a lack of clients and so on. We don’t realize how much energy is spent each day on these thoughts because it has become so second nature to us. We are conditioned to deal with these issues consistently, so it is what we spend most of our energy on. Here are six ways you are attracting your current life and how you can change it.
1. You are attracting good or bad experiences based on your thoughts
“The one who speaks most about illness has illness. The one who speaks about prosperity has prosperity,” Esther and Jerry Hicks write in The Law of Attraction: The Basics of the Teachings of Abraham. “You attract all of it.” By focusing on something, you make it happen.
Doing it wrong: When you are sick, all you think about is how you hate being sick. Everything aches and bothers you. You can’t think of anything but being sick.
Doing it right: When you are sick, think about being healthy. Imagine yourself feeling better than normal. See yourself engaging in your favorite activity with people you love.
2. Trust that little voice inside, instead of what seems like the most logical choice
In other words: Listen to your intuition. Instead of overthinking your choices, let your emotions guide you toward what is right and what is wrong. This will result in a more satisfying life.
Doing it wrong: You are up for a job promotion because it pays more money and is on track with your current career path. Deep down you are burned out and tired of politics, but the money is good and you will have a nice title.
Doing it right: You realize your health and happiness are priceless and not worth any more time or energy in a job that is no longer fulfilling. You decide to look into avenues that will fulfill you entirely and open yourself up to the universe to help you make it happen.
3. If you want something to change, you have to see before you can see it
This is something that successful people know. It’s also called “visualization.” Michael Phelps spoke about picturing himself winning every night before bed.
“In order to affect true positive change in your experience, you must disregard how things are — as well as how others are seeing you — and give more of your attention to the way you prefer things to be,” Hicks writes.
Doing it wrong: You are in debt. Bills are piling up. You can’t see the end in sight. All you can think about is how to get out of debt. Every move you make in life is to just get your head above water so you don’t feel like you are drowning.
Doing it right: Bills are piling up, and it feels overwhelming. Set up a payment plan for all of your bills and visualize yourself out of debt. Think about how you will spend your extra money. Think about the freedom you will feel. Play the kind of music that makes you feel good and makes you want to dance. Focus on feeling good and being in a state of euphoria.
4. You can increase the attraction by devoting time to “powerful thinking”
Spend 15 minutes every day thinking hard about your goals, dreams and what you want from life. Remember your thoughts become things, so make this time count!
Just do it: Focus on the things you want and not on the things you don’t.
5. Avoid TV shows that deal with negative experiences like crime or illness
With as much negativity that is taking place in our world today, it is nearly impossible to turn on the TV without seeing someone who has been murdered, some sort of hate crime or suffering around the world. Letting this stuff in makes you think about it more and distracts you from being in a positive state of mind. You can’t change the world overnight, but you certainly can change your own thoughts and mind to be a light in this darkness.
6. Know that your relationships with people are bad because you made them that way
Giving your attention to the negative can wreak havoc on personal relationships. This mentality can help free us from bad relationships with relatives or a spouse. “Nothing can come into your experience without your personal attraction to it,” says Abraham.
Doing it wrong: You find yourself constantly in drama with your family and you feel guilty about dismissing them because they are family. It is draining you and your personal time.
Doing it right: As much as you love your family, you realize that you can’t continue to lend your time to people who dwell in a sense of negativity. You have to stay in a positive state of mind and that means removing people from your life that can’t contribute to it positively.
