9 Health and fitness blogs you should start reading

The fitness industry is a tight-knit group, but you would be amazed at how diverse it is. There are many bloggers out there who just want to share their love of healthy living, eating well and exercise, which is awesome. The real gems are the exclusive few who have carved out a niche for themselves. Their blogs, messages and voices are unique; they are extraordinary in their ability to reach us — and inspire us — at a deeper level. If you are looking for an entertaining and unique health blog to follow this year, my favorite are below

Best food blog: Domesticate Me

It all starts with food, right? Domesticate Me is so damn funny that even if you don’t like food, you will still enjoy simply reading the thoughts and musings of the author, Serena Wolf. For those of us who love food, the recipes on this site are fan-freaking-tastic. I mean seriously, look at this jambalaya!

If you like healthy, filling, super-tasty, stick-to-your-ribs and carnivorous recipes, then you have to check out the Dude Diet section of this site. I want to eat every single thing on it, and I’m not even a dude! Serena initially created the Dude Diet to help her boyfriend understand that healthy eating doesn’t have to consist of boring Caesar salads and steamed broccoli, and luckily the rest of us get to benefit from it! Get your appetite together and go try one of those recipes!

Best vegan recipes: Triumph Wellness

The author of this site, Emily, tackles the topics of nutrition counseling, body-image issues, weight loss and mentality. She even offers a free meal prep guide. The real gem here is the Vegan Recipe page. It is stacked with recipes and ideas that are both simple and absolutely delish. I am not a vegan and, in fact, I am a carnivore to the core, so if she can convince me, then she can convince anyone. (Hint: Try the Buddha Bowl!)

Best infographics:Precision Nutrition

This site is loaded with science-backed info on how to properly fuel for your goals. Whether you are eating for performance or aesthetics, weight loss or mass gaining, pregnancy or chronic illnesses or injuries, you can find it here. If you are visual learner, this site is for you. I could spend a full day learning from their infographic section alone. The team at Precision Nutrition makes information that can be usually difficult to digest accessible for those of us who do not spend our days in lab coats and research facilities. The brainchild of Dr. John Berardi and Phil Caravaggio, Precision Nutrition has worked with brands like Nike and Apple, and teams like the San Antonio Spurs, and even the U.S. Olympic team. While you are checking out those awesome infographics, I encourage you to read through the wealth of scientific, yet practical knowledge bombs dropped all over this site.

Best paleo blog: PaleOMG

If you have been around the CrossFit and Paleo game at all, you know Juli Bauer and PaleOMG — and for good reason. Her mission is to create tasty, healthy recipes that are gluten-free and based on whole foods, and she is awesome at it — seriously outstanding. I found PaleOMG three years ago through her Sweet Potato Brownie recipe. It is amazing — for real. Not into sweets? First of all, that’s nuts — I don’t trust people who don’t like chocolate. OK fine, then try her Almost 5 Ingredient Pizza Spaghetti Pie.

Best podcast : Driven Performance Labs

If you love to geek-out over nutrition for performance, lifting heavy, and cursing like a trucker, then DPL’s “Feed the Machine” podcast is for you. I freaking love this podcast. Here you will find relevant and straightforward info on what to eat, when and why for optimal athletic performance and body composition. The guys and gals at Dynamic Nutrition are super smart, funny and entertaining, all while providing real, helpful and applicable nutrition info for CrossFit, powerlifting, weightlifting and physique.

Best body positive blog —From Thick 2 Thin

If you haven’t checked out From Thick 2 Thin, I highly suggest heading over there simply to shop for an awesome tank to crush your next workout in. Beyond the apparel, you’ll find an awesome blog that focuses on body positivity. Founder and author Andrea Kuchinski took on the fitness apparel industry to pave the way for athletes of all shapes and sizes to be able to rock awesome gym clothes. This blog discusses the issues of body shaming, body positivity and empowering women to be who they want to be despite stereotyping and straight up negativity. Prepare to be inspired. While you’re there, I highly recommend this tank for you and your training partner.

Best blog for fit moms — Soccer Mom with Muscles

It may be cheesy to highlight my own blog, but stay with me. I started Soccer Mom with Muscles because the only blogs for fit moms I could find were about running. Running is great, but there is so much more to being fit and healthy, right? Moms have a lot to juggle: soccer practice, play dates, dance class, work, home, marriage and then there is fitness. This blog offers quick, effective workouts, tips for feeding the family healthy, delicious meals and ways to workout together. Here you can also find motivation, fitness programs designed for women, nutrition coaching and reflections on life lessons that we can learn from our children. If you’re a mom who is working hard to get fit and serve as a positive, healthy role model for your kids, then this is a great one for you.
