I recently looked in my email’s spam folder and unearthed an email from a self-proclaimed pickup artist. How I got on his mailing list is anyone’s guess — as a writer I tend to get sent a lot of random newsletters — but this one caught my eye because it was definitely targeted to men who want to get women out of their pants as soon as possible.
I don’t remember the exact wording, but the guy said something like “women won’t respect you if you treat them nicely and take them out to dinner… they’ll think you’re weak and not worth sleeping with.”

I quickly deleted the message after I picked myself off the floor from laughing, but it made me sad (and really, really worried) that more and more men are listening to this advice found on websites and on Reddit (just look at the subreddit TheRedPill and try not to freak out — it’s impossible).
But while practices like negging — where guys insult you because it’s supposed to make you interested — are pretty obvious, other tactics are more subtle and attempt to flatter you onto your back.
One great example: The brains behind Feminist_Tinder recently unearthed a message that many self-proclaimed pickup artists are using:

“Hey, I know this is kinda weird and pushy haha, but would you like to have sex with me? I’m not a creep or a pervert, just a genuine guy. I would treat you with respect and the sex would be good. I can even make you squirt if the connection is right haha. I will not judge you or think you’re ‘easy.’ So yeah, excuse me if I come across as a little uncalibrated but I think you’re attractive, so what do you think? 🙂 Haha.”

According to BuzzFeed, the message originated from YouTube pickup artist Maximilian Berger. In his video “How to F*** Girls on Tinder,” Berger explains how he scores with women in different cities by using the message, which he calls the “apocalypse opener.”
He shows screenshots from a Tinder conversation that “proves” it works because the woman ended up giving her number. There are conflicting reports on its effectiveness in the wild, but hopefully this will go away for good now that it’s received so much publicity.
And if you are on the receiving end of the “apocalypse opener” and aren’t into it? Hit that report button, because accounts are getting banned for using it. Just view it as a service to other women.
