‘Hilarious’ abortion video shows just how unfunny trying to get an abortion really is

Hopefully you have not had to experience the painful torture of getting an abortion, and I’m not talking about physical torture. Thanks to a clueless, male-predominant bureaucracy, it is next to impossible for a woman to terminate a pregnancy in this country.

Even if she happens to be in a state that technically allows her to get one, she’ll still have to wade through a sea of obstacles designed to change her mind at every turn. As if making the decision to terminate a pregnancy wasn’t hard enough, our government believes it has the right to try to control what a supposedly free woman does with her own body.

Regardless of whether you’ve been in the unfortunate situation of needing an abortion, it’s not hard to see that this regulation of our bodies is absurd. However, for those folks who still don’t get it, ACLU decided to make a pretty effective comparison to another kind of torture everyone understands — waiting on the phone for customer service.

If you’ve ever used Time Warner Cable, the wait times they give in this video probably don’t sound all that exaggerated to you. To get some simple computer troubleshooting, this poor girl had to be on hold for three days, listen to terrifying warnings about the service she’s trying to procure and be told she has to travel 100-plus miles twice to get it. Yes, this is ludicrous. It’s also precisely what women have to endure for a service that should be just as available to them as any other doctor’s appointment.

With that in mind, Facebook user Brian Murtagh found this incredibly brilliant quote about abortion regulations in comparison to gun regulations in America, and he posted it on his wall.

Can I get an “amen”? Think about it. “It makes more sense to do this with young men and guns than with women and health care, right? I mean, no woman getting an abortion has killed a room full of people in seconds, right?” So now that someone without lady parts gets it, can we please reopen all the shuttered Planned Parenthoods? Huh?

ACLU made this video in reaction to the historic Supreme Court case Whole Women’s Health v. Hellerstedt, which looks to dismantle all but 10 Planned Parenthoods in Texas. Those 10 would then be the only service centers to which most of the 5.4 million women in Texas could turn if they needed an abortion. As a result, many of those women will either decide to keep their babies, regardless of whether they can afford to, or attempt dangerous self-abortions, which could threaten their lives.

This is not how a country that boasts “liberty and justice for all” should be run. In terms of health care, women are often treated like second-class citizens who don’t have the right to choose what happens to their own bodies. Even in the “more liberal” states, women still have to face unnecessarily long wait times, lack of public clinics and crazy, unproven warnings about what an abortion can do to their bodies. When you compare this to our incredibly lenient gun regulations, there are simply no words to describe the lack of logic that continues to reign supreme.

All we can do is continue to advocate for change and make sure whoever gets that coveted seat in the White House cares about the well-being of women in America.
