We love Bella Thorne’s honesty about her crappy health issues

Anyone who has had a colonoscopy will know it’s not a particularly pleasant experience. It’s also slightly embarrassing and not something we’re in a hurry to share with the world.

Not Bella Thorne. The 18-year-old actress chose to share her colonoscopy experience with her millions of social media followers, tweeting, Instagramming and Snapchatting updates before and after her exam.

A colonoscopy is an exam that involves inserting a long, flexible tube with a tiny camera on the end (a colonoscope) into the rectum to detect any changes to the large intestine (rectum and colon). Areas of inflammation or bleeding, ulcers, colon polyps and tumors may be detected by a colonoscopy. During the exam, tissue samples can be collected and abnormal growths can be removed. It may also be used to screen for cancer or precancerous growths in the colon or rectum.

Thorne didn’t mince her words when describing what is was like to take the grim laxative drink to clear out her bowels (so the doctors could get a better look at what was happening).

She even shared her lying on a gurney/blue paper hairnet look.

Thorne hasn’t revealed why she had the colonoscopy, but it could be one of several reasons. A doctor might recommend the exam if a patient has unexplained abdominal pain, rectal bleeding, chronic constipation or diarrhea or a history of colon cancer in the family.

Let’s be honest, the thought of getting a camera inserted into your butt isn’t appealing. But if you have to have one, the best way to get through it is to do a Bella Thorne, i.e. take it in stride and use a bit of humor to stop it from being such a pain in the ass. It’s great to see that she’s taking her health seriously and is willing to put any embarrassment aside to show her fans that unpleasant medical procedures are a part of life.
