Kirsten Dunst Shuts Down Sofia Coppola’s Request That She Lose Weight for a Movie

After two decades of working together, Kirsten Dunst had no qualms about telling director Sofia Coppola that she had no intention of losing weight for her new role.

Coppola asked Dunst to drop a few pounds for her role in the upcoming Southern Gothic drama The Beguiled, but the actor immediately pushed back.

The film was shot on location in rural Louisiana — in fact, at the same plantation where Beyoncé’s “Lemonade” filmed — and apparently, the food options were limited.

“I’m eating fried chicken and McDonald’s before work,” she told Variety. “So I’m like, ‘We have no options! I’m sorry I can’t lose weight for this role.'”

Dunst also noted that “it’s so much harder when you’re 35 and hate working out,” but said that Coppola was very understanding.

The longtime collaborators, who worked together on films like 1999’s The Virgin Suicides and 2006’s Marie Antoinette, emphasize that they actually have a great working relationship. In fact, when Coppola first met Dunst in 1998 when the actor was 16, she immediately took on more of a big sister role, telling her that she didn’t need to fix her teeth, even though others in Hollywood suggested she did.

“She gave me confidence in little things that I wouldn’t necessarily have had,” Dunst told Variety.
