Regardless of whether you’re going bare down there or sporting a full bush, most of us partake in some sort of pubic hair grooming – even if it’s just a trim. Now, thanks to a new study, we also know that a lot of people are injuring themselves in the process.
Research published yesterday in the Journal of the American Medical Association found that 24 percent of men and 27 percent of women have hurt themselves in one way while pube-scaping. And given that more than two-thirds of men and 85 percent of women between the ages of 18 and 64 report actively grooming their pubic hair, that’s a pretty significant number.

Not only that, but 1.4 percent sustained injuries serious enough to require medical attention.
The study didn’t differentiate between various types of grooming (whether it’s trimming with scissors, waxing or other methods) or degree (whether it’s just a little off the bottom or full Brazilian) but did note that waxing may prevent repetitive injuries.

So what kinds of injuries are we talking about? The most common is some sort of cut (61 percent) followed by burn (23 percent) and rashes (12 percent). Men most commonly reported injuries to their scrotum (67 percent), penis (35 percent) and pubis (29 percent). For women, the problem spots are the pubis (51 percent), inner thigh (45 percent), vagina (42.5 percent — and I’m guessing they mean vulva or labia because there’s no need to groom inside a vagina) and perineum (13 percent — and that’s the spot between your anus and vulva or scrotum).

The bottom line is to be careful when wielding scissors or hot wax around your nether regions — or anywhere else, for that matter. A steady hand and a small mirror go a long way to helping target and remove the unwanted hair.
