Meet the New Mental Health Ambassador for Global Citizen — Demi Lovato

Demi Lovato has been sharing her struggle with mental illness publicly for years now. Over the weekend, she announced via Instagram that she’s the new mental health ambassador for Global Citizen, which describes itself as “a social action platform for a global generation that wants to solve the world’s biggest challenges.”

According to her Instagram post, Lovato will focus on “vulnerable communities around the world” to be able to use her platform to further her work on mental health and well-being.

Over the past year, Lovato has been working with Global Citizen to find the right partner to “help bring a bit of solace and peace to some of the displaced children in Iraq,” eventually identifying Save the Children’s HEART program (which, Lovato wrote, “offers healing, psychological support and basic education through the arts,”).

“My hope is that this program can bring a bit of comfort to those who need the most,” she said in her post. “This isn’t about politics or race or religion. It’s simply about humanity and protecting one another.”

This isn’t the first time Lovato has lent her name to causes related to mental health. In fact, earlier this year, she was the executive producer of a documentary called Beyond Silence, which was made in conjunction with Be Vocal — a partnership between leading mental health advocacy organizations and Sunovion Pharmaceuticals.

Lovato called her new ambassadorship an honor and said she was excited about the upcoming pilot program with Save the Children.
