As concerns about coronavirus expand across the U.S. leading to loads of people shopping to prepare (albeit not necessarily following the advice of health officials with some purchases), the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) released a list of expert-approved disinfecting products that can be useful for deep cleaning your home and work environments and effectively and killing the germs that cause COVID-19.
“The EPA-registered disinfectant products on our Disinfectants for Use Against SARS-CoV-2 list have qualified under EPA’s emerging viral pathogen program for use against SARS-CoV-2, a coronavirus that causes COVID-19,” the agency writes on their website. “Coronaviruses are enveloped viruses, meaning they are one of the easiest types of viruses to kill with the appropriate disinfectant product.”
While the EPA list includes a number of different powerful cleaners, we focused on the ready to use (RTU) ones noted on the doc that were available for purchase and in stock as of press time. Obviously, for any of the approved products (depending on what you can get a hold of) it’s advised that you follow the instructions given by the manufacturer for safe use and be mindful of strong chemicals. And, of course, keep them away from kids and pets (like we needed to tell you that!)
Lysol Disinfectant Spray
A multi-surface spray, the product claims to kill 99.9 percent of viruses and bacteria, 100 illness causing germs, odor causing bacteria. It also prevents mold and mildew from growing while sanitizing hard and soft surfaces.
Clorox Healthcare Bleach Germicidal Cleaner Pull-Top
Used in medical facilities, hospitals, dental offices and long term care facilities, the pull-top bottle allows you to easily pour what you need out to cover larger areas.
Clorox Healthcare Bleach Germicidal Wipes
Wipes are an easy, non-stressful way to wipe down surfaces that might’ve been exposed to germs. As these strong wipes contain bleach and all the germ-killing chemicals in the Germicidal line, you want to keep them somewhere safe and out of reach of any little hands who might think they’re baby wipes.
PDI Super Sani-Cloth Cleaner Disinfectant
A hefty supply of disinfectant cloth wipes, these have a high alcohol content allowing them to work against gross bacteria, fungi and viruses hiding out on surfaces in your house and office. Great to run over anywhere grubby, barely-washed hands might’ve touched.
Though cleaning the germs off of surfaces in your home is always smart (bodies are gross, hands are gross and we touch so many gross things and then ourselves on the reg), it’s important to remember that the most impactful way of slowing spread of a coronavirus between people is by washing your hands, not touching your face and being smart about whether you go into work/send kids into school if someone isn’t feeling well. But, nonetheless, prioritize washing your hands with soap and water and do it well.
