There’s very few situations where you’ll hear someone like Jillian Michaels (for better or worse) disparaging going to the gym. In an interview with Fox Business, Michaels shared that she tested positive for COVID-19 in recent weeks and opened up about whether she thinks it’s wise or safe to try and get back to the in-person gym ASAP during the pandemic.
“I am actually a person who let my guard down,” Michaels said. “I haven’t even spoken about this publicly really, and a really close friend of mine gave me COVID several weeks ago.”
Obviously in the pandemic, caution is key — wearing masks, washing your hands and staying home/keeping contact with others who can’t do the same are important factors to reducing your odds of coming in contact with the virus.
“I’m fortunate to have gone into it being healthy and I was able to get on the other side of it pretty quick,” Michaels said about her COVID-19 experience. “But not everybody is that lucky as we know.”
As SheKnows previously reported, going to the gym (even if they are opening) isn’t necessarily the smartest move — because it’s more of a financial decision on the part of the company than a public health decision on behalf of your body and your family’s bodies. So unless you are somehow able to be absolutely sure that no one at your gym has run a temperature (or is an asymptomatic carrier) or are working out wearing a mask and surrounded by other mask-wearers, the gym remains yet another part of your self-care “normal” that you’ll probably want to keep on hold.
“All I can tell you is if you are afraid of getting COVID, a public gym is probably a place where you will get it,” Michaels agreed — noting she has a fitness app that allows you to do safe workouts from home.
She adds that equipment-free and bodyweight workouts are plentiful and plenty effective on their own for getting your sweat on.
“You have your own body weight and you can use it in a million different ways, literally, to get a superior workout,” she said.
So if you were on the fence about renewing that gym membership or trying to make it out to your old reliable fitness class the minute it opens, maybe sit on it a bit more.
