Doja Cat Says She’s Quitting Vaping After Tonsil Surgery Scare & Opens Up About Nicotine Addiction

Doja Cat has decided to quit vaping despite her nicotine addiction, as the singer is too frightened to continue after developing a tonsil infection that required surgery.

Recounting the health scare on Twitter, Cat initially shared that her “whole throat is f**ked” and “might have some bad news for yall coming soon,” as her tonsils had just been operated on. (Never good news for a singer.)

“My tonsils got infected before BBMAs and I was taking…antibiotics…but forgot that I was taking them,” the Grammy winner clarified in a follow-up tweet. “Then I drank wine and was vaping all day long and then I started getting a nasty ass growth on my tonsil so they had to do surgery on it today.” She detailed the surgery some more in yet some more tweets (take a look for yourself if you’re curious), noting that while she “cried and it hurt a lot,” she’s finally doing okay.

In response to one fan who questioned whether or not she’s still vaping, Cat asserted she’s “quitting the vape for a while.”

“Hopefully I don’t crave it anymore after that,” she added. “I’m too scared to hit it cuz my throat hurts so bad. I cried for hours. It’s not worth it.”

TBH, we agree that it’s not exactly worth it: As of February 2020, 2,807 people had been hospitalized with e-cigarette, vaping, and/or product use-associated lung injury (EVALI), 68 of which resulted in death (this number is likely now much higher; this is data from two years ago). Experts also believe that musicians publicly vaping may be influencing teens to try it, while research found vaping increases the risk of contracting COVID-19.

The “Say So” singer went onto point out that imagining “all that weird poisonous shit in the vape seeping into the completely open wound” in her throat is what really gave her pause. However she also addressed how complicated addiction can be, telling one fan who advised she throw her vape away that doing so would simply “instill panic.”

“I’m addicted…I’ma try to go cold turkey for now but hopefully my brain doesn’t need it all by then,” she explained. “Also what makes yall think I can’t go buy a 50 pack right now? It’s not about throwing them away it’s about not needing them. Right now I NEED THEM. I don’t WANT them [right now] because I’m in pain. But my brain is addicted to it.”

Plus, Cat believes that the “throw it away” mentality is condescending to individuals struggling with nicotine addiction. “I’ve tried all that throw it away shit before. Doesn’t work.”

The singer then thanked her fans for their support and admitted she would really like a Taco Bell Mexican pizza. (Unfortunately she cannot have one as she has “a whole ass thrussy” in her neck, she says.)

Here’s hoping Doja Cat gets well — and her hands on a Mexican Pizza — soon.
