Drink tea to reduce dementia and heart disease

Wouldn’t you love to drink yourself younger? New research suggests that tea may just do the trick. No, increasing your consumption of tea isn’t going to make you look 15 years younger, but it may keep your mind sharp and reduce your risk of heart disease.

Tea keeps the mind sharp

Recent research suggests that people who drink two cups of black tea a day cut their risk of dementia in half. For two years, scientists in Singapore studied the lifestyle of 2,500 people, aged 55 and over, and recorded the participants’ tea intake as well as their cognitive function.

The scientists found that participants who drank the most tea were the least likely to have suffered cognitive decline, which is an early sign of dementia. Researchers conclude that drinking two to three cups of tea a day cut the risk of dementia by 55 percent and drinking six to 10 cups cut the risk of illness by 63 percent.

The findings are a bright light for people who like their daily caffeine. A recent report in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that coffee did not have the same benefit on cognitive function.

Drink to a healthy heart

A study reported in the latest issue of European Journal of Cardiovascular Prevention and Rehabilitation indicates that drinking green tea can reduce your risk of atherosclerosis, the process in which plaque builds up on artery walls, by improving endothelial function. Endothelial cells line the arteries of the circulatory system and are related to heart-health.
While black tea has been associated with improved short and long-term endothelial performance, this is the first time that green tea has been shown to have a short-term beneficial effect on the large arteries. Another study has already shown that green tea reverses endothelial dysfunction in smokers.
