After a date, there’s always analysis. Here, get both sides from the story in this first date he said/she said!
She Said…
Initial Assessment
Guy and I spoke briefly on the phone — 23 minutes to be exact. It felt like a job interview; he might as well have asked, “What makes you the best person for this job?” and have been done with it. I called one of my girlfriends and described the conversation with this statement: “What just happened?”
Checklist Fulfilled
I laid eyes on him in a dark parking lot. At first glance — not bad. Even in the dim light, his pale blue eyes were mesmerizing in that “I know they are” type of way. We walked to the door together, and I surveyed his ensemble. Nice shoes — check. Pants that fit well — check. Hair — check… and well done. All in all, this 36-year-old was pulled together. He let me walk ahead of him as we were seated — nice. He let me order first — good. We appear to have the same eating habits having ordered fairly similar meals. And he’s so polite he even let me have at the ketchup first; I can get used to this. Who wouldn’t want a well-mannered man?
Without going into detail about the convo, one word to describe it: fluid. It was an equal exchange of jokes, laughs and interesting things said. But beyond the chemistry, what really attracted me to him (aside from his ability to intrigue me and that modest arrogance I’ve been known to appreciate) was his quirkiness. He had this way of speaking and smiling that held me in this way that I can’t articulate right now.
Holy Awkwardness
At the date’s end, there was a fleeting moment of awkwardness. We walked to our respective cars conveniently parked next to each other. I said, “Well this was fun. I had a good time.” He agreed. He leaned in — and I never know what to do when they do that. (Do I turn my head and give him the cheek? Do I just go for it? What if he isn’t leaning in for the kiss and I extend my mouth and get the cheek? But wait — do I even want to kiss him? Goodness gracious!) So, I attempted to catch his kiss but failed miserably. Sure, his lips landed on mine, but it was more like a peculiar swipe than a nice smooch.
Deep breath. Despite the kiss eeriness, I believe that was first-date success, which is rare for me. How do I know? Well, I’m already looking forward to the second meeting before even being asked.
