Ways to keep active in cooler weather

The threats of bikinis and summer clothes may have gone, but that’s no excuse to quit the exercise. Keep up your workouts through the nastiest weather with these tips.

Whether the cool seasons mean you’d rather work out in your house or you’re still determined to get to the gym or go outside, we’ve got the best cold weather workout tips for you.

Exercise in the home

Clean the house! Put a bit of elbow grease into it and you’ll kill two birds with one stone. Make sure you stretch up to clean the cobwebs from the highest corners, get down to mop the floors and put your whole body behind the vacuum.

Dance it out: Grab the kids, turn the radio up loud and have a dance party in your living room. You’ll be having so much fun you won’t even realise how many kilojoules you’re burning!

Kitchen workouts: If you don’t have any weights or workout equipment with you, find things around the home you can use to maximise your fitness exercises. A few cans of soup make great dumbbells, you can slide down the walls to practise seat exercises and steady yourself against the dining room table to work your legs.

Involve technology: There are plenty of fantastic YouTube tutorials to take you through your yoga, pilates or kickboxing sessions. Alternatively, invest in a workout DVD and you’ll have it on hand whenever you need it. Is this the perfect excuse to buy a Wii?

Set up a home gym: If you’ve got a spare room and some extra cash, or you consider the money you’ll save on gym fees, it might be worth setting up a home gym. This will encourage you to pop in for more regular sessions, rather than finding the motivation to lug yourself to the gym in rainy weather. Look out for an affordable treadmill or bike machine, a fit ball and a yoga mat.

Cold weather workout tips

If you’re still determined to make it to the gym or head outside for a jog, these ideas might help you to find that little bit of extra motivation.

Opt for heated: Heated swimming pools and heated yoga rooms might be extra incentive when you’re trying to convince yourself to exercise on a cold day.

Warm your clothes: If you’re finding it tough to get out of your cosy pyjamas and into gym gear, try throwing them in the heater for a few minutes to warm them up. You’ll actually be keen to hop into your exercise pants!

It’s all about layers: Wear multiple layers of clothing so you can peel them off as you get further into your workout and warm up your body. If you’re heading outside, make sure the kidneys are covered from the cold and even start off with a scarf to keep your neck warm.

Warm up well: Warm-ups are always essential before a workout, but when you’re about to exercise in cool weather, they’re absolutely vital. Spend a little longer working on your stretches and lunges to avoid injury.
