Being a digital mom: How to keep up with your blog while you’re on vacation

You can take a week off from mom blogging

Is it possible to take a week off from mom blogging, Twitter, Facebook and everything else social media? Don’t worry moms, it is! Here’s how you can do it without losing readers.

When I first started blogging back in 2007, I didn’t think anything about taking a few days off here and there. I even remember going on a family trip for 10 days that summer and truthfully not even sweating the fact that there wouldn’t be any new content on my blog for that extended period of time. It was almost as if I just hung a sign on my blog that read, “Gone fishing!” and just sort of assumed my readers would still be there when I eventually came back.

It’s amazing how times have changed. If I don’t update my blog two to three times a day, I now start to panic (I’m half kidding)!

In all seriousness, all mom bloggers need a break, and with summer around the corner, now’s the perfect time to do so. It’s impossible to keep going and going and going without taking a breather or a relaxing sigh. It’s the very reason why companies allow employees to have vacation days — it’s a necessary and essential part of working. The only difference between an “office” job and a “mom blogging” job is that, at the office, there are people who can take over your duties while you’re gone. With the blogging world, it’s a little different. There aren’t officemates who can walk over to your desk and just easily “take over” while you’re away.

Here’s the deal though, and this is the raw and honest truth. As much as I believe and know it’s necessary to take a blogging break while you’re on vacation with your family, it’s also important not to just disappear completely. Content is key, and it’s important to keep something going on your blog, even when you’re on vacation.

How can you accomplish this?

Here are three ways to keep your blog up-and-running, even when you’re away without internet access (someone hold me!):

1

Guest bloggers

When I went away last year for a week, I called on my mom blogging friends for a little help. I asked a bunch of my friends if anyone would be open to guest posting on my blog while I was away. I knew I was going to be gone for five days, so I was able to get five mom bloggers to send me one post each. I just made sure that every single day, a new post went live on my blog from them. I had notified my readers beforehand, so everyone expected it, and I felt good knowing that while I was away, I didn’t have to worry about producing content. It made it very easy for me. Since I have a style blog for moms, I had asked my friends to each do a post about their favorite trends of the moment. The content fit and people seemed to enjoy reading new bloggers.

2

Posting ahead

This is something that I highly recommend you doing, especially if you’re going to be gone for an extended period of time. I’m going to warn you, this is a little time consuming, but well worth it. Take a few days before you go away to create postings for yourself and postdate them. Just create “x” amount of evergreen stories (5 Favorite trends, 5 Easy recipes, How to braid hair, etc.) and post them all up in a row. This is great to do because then you can just leave your blog and know that everything will post when it’s supposed to because everything is time stamped. Easy Peasy!

3

Reposting

If you don’t have the time to post ahead with all new content, just repost some fabulous blogs that you have done before. You could have a little fun and repost things from a year ago. My sister-in-law did this last week and I got a kick out of reading postings she had written exactly a year ago that very day.

It’s a simple and easy way to keep content cycling on your blog while you’re on vacation, but it’s also really cool content, too. The goal is to keep content going each day, so even though it’s repetitive content, it’s still “new” content.
