Holiday dating dilemma: I think it’s time for us to break up

Uh oh, are you feeling like your relationship has run its course — right before Christmas? There’s no worse time to think about breaking up with someone. Before you pull the plug, we have some advice on how to handle a holiday breakup with tact.

Holiday breakup advice

Is this for real?

First things first — are you really, truly sure it’s over? The holidays can be a stressful, emotional time for some people, so before you do the deed, make sure it’s not the stress of the season talking, and that you really are done with the relationship. However, if you really feel like you’re at the end of your relationship rope and you’re no longer invested in this person, or you no longer respect them, you are correct in thinking it’s time to move on.

Pros and cons of a holiday breakup

The downside of breaking up with someone this close to Christmas is… being that person who breaks up with someone this close to Christmas. It will likely hurt more, be harder to actually do and seem somehow crueler than if you’d done it at any other time of year. However, letting a dead-end relationship drag out over the holidays means spending what’s supposed to be a fun, festive time of year with someone you’ve grown to dislike, not to mention shelling out money on a gift for them, too. Not fun.

So what’s a girl to do?

Well, if you simply can’t take the thought of one more minute in this relationship, let alone the idea of buying this person you no longer even like a gift, or worse, spending time with his family during the holidays and pretending like everything is fine, there’s only one thing you can do. Break it off. But, do so in a way that is as tactful and direct as possible. Be honest without blaming, be kind without leaving hope of reconciliation. There’s nothing worse than a wishy-washy breakup.
