Who says art always has to cost you a pretty penny? To decorate our new pad, my boyfriend and I decided to do something totally off the wall. We made a masterpiece using our bodies as the paintbrushes!
Agreeing to disagree
The one thing Kenny and I definitely didn’t agree on (and still don’t!) when we moved in together was how to decorate our walls. He had the typical guy stuff he wanted to hang up, like action shots of Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant being awesome and what not (gag), while I was still holding onto cheap framed fashion prints I’d bought at Target, like four years back. Needless to say, I’d outgrown them and was so ready for some new decor that made me feel like a real adult.
The only problem was, neither of us was exactly willing to splurge on fine art just to have something pretty to look at. Call us cheap, but replacing things like our old mismatched living room furniture and nonexistent dining room table seemed like more of a priority at the time. Then, by chance, we happened to find out about Love Is Art.
Painting the perfect picture
In a nutshell, it’s a kit created by South African born abstract artist Jeremy Brown, which “comes with everything a couple needs to safely make a tangible piece of abstract expressionistic art while being intimate with each other.”
Whoa! I get to have sex while making art? This seems so unlike me. However, it also seemed like a really, really cool (and inexpensive) way to “break in our new home” and end this silly wall decor war for good. I knew our DIY masterpiece, no matter how awful it looked, would always make me smile whenever I passed by it because it would remind me of him — my boyfriend, the love of my life, Kenny. And I was fine with that.
The kit came with a plastic painters tarp, 41″ x 54″ specially treated white cotton canvas, a four-ounce bottle of organic washable paint, two pairs of throw away slippers and a body scrubber. We started by setting everything up as outlined in the instructions. Then the clothes came off next. Hey, this is supposed to be body painting, people!
Kenny squeezed the black paint evenly over the canvas, playfully squirting some on my chest (OK, boobs) and legs, as well as his own body, as we prepared to smear our naked limbs onto this previously perfectly white, untainted canvas. We exchanged a few loving kisses as we tried to control our laughter and excitement… this was fun, really fun! We sort of felt like kids again, finger painting except with our whole bodies and a whole lot more naughty. It makes me blush even thinking that I’m writing about this.
As for the sex thing, let’s just say we tried but it’s not so simple when your privates are covered in paint and you’re on the hard ground. It didn’t matter to us, though, because we were having a blast either way, rubbing paint on one another as we fashioned something for our new home together.
Scrub-a-dub-dub
Once we were done, we carefully put on our slippers (but not before taking a quick Instagram photo), went upstairs and hopped in our tiny shower. With some soap and strategic scrubbing, the paint washed off fairly easy.
Now all that’s left to do is frame our masterpiece and hang it above the couch in our living room, which just so happens to be the perfect spot. None of our guests have to know that my boobs and his butt actually helped create it, right?
