We know at this point that celebrities have more time, energy and resources to spend on their, well, everything. If our dearest Goop is any indication, this can also mean their workout tastes can run a bit weird (not always in a bad way — but also occasionally in a feeding into diet culture way that doesn’t feel too great).
But the celebrities you love aren’t immune to needing to change up their approach to fitness — after all, boredom can be such a workout buzzkill for all of us. Whether it’s activities that are quirky but otherwise not out of place on a playground (like hula hooping) to opting to drop and give yourself 20 push-ups on a seconds notice to facial yoga and 2am wake-up calls, the rich and famous find their own ways to keep themselves engaged and feeling their best.
Celebrity fitness and workout routines can be deeply entertaining to learn about in a voyeuristic way, for sure. And (in the cases of non-destructive, creepily expensive, uncomfortable or obsessive behavior) they might even be a cool way to find your own fitness inspiration to liven up your own plain old peloton, workout video or yoga routine.
So read on for a few of the wild, weird and interesting celebrity workouts we’ve found.
Mel B
We know that orgasms and kissing are good for your health — but Mel B (who is already forthcoming about her favorite sex toy) shares that sex is her preferred workout. Five times a day, in fact.
As Huffpost reported, Scary Spice shared that frequent sex workouts are her go-to: “Me and my husband, we’re the same age, he is my best friend and I guess we’re both just perverts with each other.”
CA: The Los Angeles Philharmonic Homecoming Concert & Gala –
The instagram trend of nude yoga and meditation made its way to Hollywood (naturally). And Michelle Rodriguez has shared her own snaps of the practice on her insta, though notes the mosquitos can harsh your mellow a bit.
Matthew McConaughey
In a 2010 Men’s Health interview that I’m still thinking about, McConaughey said he likes to challenge himself by throwing in chaotic and random intervals of pushups (and other moves that strike his mood) on his days off.
“I’ll drop and give myself 20 pushups at intervals throughout the day. 9 a.m., bang out 20. Sitting in a boring meeting at 10:30. Bang out 20. I do that 10 times throughout the day, I’ve done 200,” he says. “Or even mix it up with crunches, squats, whatever. Also, I have a 12-pound medicine ball. I’ll just think, Pick up the medicine ball and don’t put it down for 30 minutes. Try that once. You will have a workout, man.”
Kate Upton
Do you even lift, bruh? Kate Upton does — but not just with her arms or legs. The model has shared videos on instagram of her lifting 225 lbs (like that’s a whole-ass person, maybe two!) with her hips!
Now, hip thrusts themselves aren’t super weird (especially when you’re working on your butt muscles) but this intensity is absolutely wild (and inspiring) to watch.
Paris: Celebrity Sightings In Paris – March 2nd, 2022
So yoga is undoubtedly great for your mind and body, but did you know there’s yoga specifically for your face?
Of course, Posh spice herself does it, as the Guardian notes. The practice involves various expressions for your face — though it may not have the desired effect if you’re trying to ward off appearing your age (though, we love smile and laugh lines in these parts!)
Gwyneth Paltrow
You didn’t think we’d make it through this list without a Goop shout-out, did you? Gwyneth Paltrow’s out-there and game-for-most-things energy toward wellness and fitness is well-documented, as is her love of yoga sans gravity. Blogging about the practice in 2013, Paltrow said “in comparison to other yoga classes, the moves felt constructive without feeling like a chore. Part of what makes it so special is the sense of suspension.”
Mark Wahlberg
Mark Wahlberg is no stranger to fitness (hello, 90s Marky Mark Workouts!) But his updated routine is a whole lot more intense, if his circa 2018 instagram posts are any indication. As Elle noted, just reading abiout his wake-up call (2:30 AM!) can make you bone tired.
He then also shared how he follows that early-riser wake-up with prayer, an hour and a half workout, a meal, some golf, cryo chamber recovery (WTF!) and a full day before capping off with a 4pm second workout, family time and a 7:30 bedtime.
Hard pass?
Kelly Osbourne
Bringing some much-needed whimsy to this list is Kelly Osbourne’s workout of choice: Hula hooping!
The star shared with Redbook in 2013 how the hynotic, hip-shaking routine was a fun take on toning exercises: “Hula hooping for fitness is brilliant. It’s a challenging workout (you use a weighted hoop) with a playfulness that makes you want to keep going. I’ve been supplementing my regular workouts, which include running, strength training, and yoga, with about 10 minutes of this Hoopnotica routine each day…”
