Tips for apartment storage

Tiny spaces can be big problems, especially when you’re trying to cram all of your stuff into a less-than-spacious apartment. We’ve got tips to make it work!

Is it possible to have too much of a good thing? It sure is — especially when you don’t have a place to put it all! Small apartments are major headaches when it comes to storage, but we’ve got solutions for your space!

The living room

  • Bookshelves — Bookshelves work for more than books. Use them to showcase picture frames and trinkets or fill the shelves with toys and DVDs. Anything that fits is far game. Pick up a cheap one and add wallpaper behind the shelves or molding around the top to fancy it up a bit.
  • Baskets — Use baskets to hide unsightly items that or to minimize clutter. Fill a pretty basket with children’s toys, office supplies, cookbooks or anything else, then set it on a shelf or under a side table to make it less noticeable.
  • Coffee table — Swap out your coffee table (if you’ve got room for one) with a storage ottoman. If you’re stuck on the idea of an actual table, choose one with a shelf or drawers underneath.

The bedroom

  • Bed risers — Use bed risers to make more usable space under your bed. You’ll have tons of space for boxes and totes!
  • Side table swap — Swap out your side table for decorative boxes or suitcases and fill them with out-of-season clothes or shoes.
  • Closet shelves — add extra shelves to the top or bottom of your closet. It won’t take you long to find something to go there!
  • Behind doors — Add hooks or hanging storage behind your bedroom door and inside your closet doors.

The bathroom

  • Hang it — If you don’t have much counter space in your bathroom, take advantage of the space on the walls! Hang a three-tiered wire basket or pretty mail sorter on the wall for storing smaller items.
  • Bling it — Use small, decorative hooks to hang your necklaces and bracelets on the wall. It doubles as décor and frees up a drawer.
  • Small shelving — Every bathroom could use a little more storage, but it’s hard to find something pretty that’s small enough for that space. Try a three-tiered plant stand — use it for holding hand towels and washcloths, styling tools or some of those bottles of product threatening to spill out from under your sink.

The kitchen

  • Pots and pans — Your pots and pans take up a ton of space. Use a pot rack or an open railing system to hang pots and pans and utensils you use frequently.
  • Get more shelving — Most small apartment kitchens don’t come with an abundance of kitchen shelving. If you’ve got space, consider adding a metal baker’s rack to store cookware, small appliances, dishes and even food. Use baskets and decorative bins to store smaller items.
  • Cart it — A kitchen cart not only gives you extra storage space but also adds an extra counter when you’re preparing food. As an added bonus, it’s on wheels, so you can always move it if it gets in your way!
  • Spice it up — Use magnetic containers to store your spices on your fridge, freeing up a shelf or two in your cabinets.
  • Add more shelves — Use wire shelving inside your cabinets to stack more plates and bowls in the same space.
