How to freshen up your home for spring

The doom and gloom of winter is finally over and spring has arrived. There’s no reason the beauty of the season has to stay outside. Revitalize your home with a light and airy feel. It’s time to send Old Man Winter packing and give your home a fresh new look.

Start with a clean slate

Clean out all the dirt and grime winter left behind. Scrub the floors, and dust and wash the windows to let the sun shine through. Unclutter shelves, cabinets, tables and countertops. Go through your closets and look under beds. Get rid of anything you don’t want or don’t use. You’ll be surprised how quickly your home starts to feel fresher once it’s clean.

Out of sight, out of mind

Banish winter to the basement or garage. Gather your winter coats, hats, gloves, scarves and boots and pack them away. Replace them with a rain coat, light spring jacket and rain boots. Collect ice scrapers, shovels, salt and other winter survival gear and relocate it to an out of the way spot. You don’t need to look at this depressing gear anymore until the weather turns cold again. Move your sweaters and other winter clothing to storage and get out your spring and summer duds. You’ll feel happier each time you open your closet doors and see the light fabrics and pretty patterns.

Lighten up

Change out your winter fabrics and replace them with lighter linens for the spring. Take down your heavy winter drapes and hang up sheers to let the sunshine in and to brighten up your home. Replace heavy knit blankets with lightweight throws, and change out your heavy winter quilt for something lighter.

Brighten up

Change out the dark and dreary colors of winter for bright, fun spring shades. Switch out pillows and throws in your living room and bedroom. Add a light sofa cover if your couch is a dark or a heavier fabric, such as plaid. In the kitchen, trade out your hand towels and throw rugs for bright ones that remind you of the garden, and hang a bright shower curtain in your bathroom.

Bring the outside in

You know spring is on its way when pretty flowers start to bloom at the first sign of warm weather. Bring some of those flowers inside! Fill vases with your favorite blooms and place them on tables, mantles and window sills to remind you that spring is here.

Give your table a facelift

Change out your formal tableware for fun, seasonal pieces. Chose brightly colored and inexpensive melamine tableware to infuse some spring into your dining room. Select coordinating placemats and serving dishes to complete the look.

The nose knows

It’s starting to look like spring inside – make it smell that way too! Replace your winter candles and potpourris with spring scents like fresh linen, lilac and lavender. Place a different scent in each room so you notice the change as you move through your house.
