Decorating Diva: 8 ways to warm up your home this winter

by

Welcome to Decorating Diva, where every week we share fresh, fun ways to update your home and spice up your living space! Baby, it’s cold outside! The temperature is dropping and Jack Frost is on his way, whether we like it or not. Stay warm in style this winter with our picks for eye-catching home accessories that are sure to make you and your guests feel snug and cozy as the snow swirls outside.

Hand knit hangers

Guests will warm up just looking at these cozy knit hangers sitting pretty in your hall closet (Leroy & Perry, $35). The one-of-a-kind crocheted hangers are handmade and come in a variety of designs and patters that will make you wonder why you ever bothered with wire or plastic.

Glass oil burners

Add elegance to any surface, from the dining table to your mantel, with these ornate handmade glass oil burners made from recycled glass (Uncommon Goods, $40). Choose from four designs, each painted to represent one of the seasons. We suggest splurging on all four to create a warm, eye-catching display. Each one comes with a wick and one bottle of paraffin oil.

Knitted pouf

Add extra seating and warm up any room with these whimsical knitted poufs (CB2, $90). Whether used as an ottoman or floor pillow, these playful pieces add an element of fun to your living room or den. We’re partial to the camo (an army green) but these cozy accents also come in turquoise, gray and orange.

Pinecone firestarters

Just looking at this set of nine pinecone firestarters in a rustic wood basket makes us feel warm and cozy (Crate & Barrel, $40). Though they’re meant for a more practical purpose (i.e., getting a fire going), we can’t resist their charm and may just use them as a nature-inspired home accent. If you do run out of firestarters, think about adding regular pinecones to the accompanying box for a similar look.

Flameless wax candle

Nothing warms up a space quite like a softly dancing flame, and we were immediately drawn to these festive red candles that create a natural warm glow without the flame or smoke (Pottery Barn, $14.50 to $29.50). These novel candles are great for any gatherings where kids or pets will be present, and you can even put them on a timer to turn on or off at a desired time each day.

Seasonal mugs

We simply love the idea of sipping hot cocoa from these charming winter earthenware mugs, each adorned with a bold stag (Williams-Sonoma, $40 for set of four). The sturdy rustic mugs make a toasty addition to your seasonal table, whether you’re entertaining or enjoying tea by the fire. Don’t put these cute cups away — they’re nice enough to display on your countertop all winter.

Faux-fur throw

Faux-fur is shaping up to be a winter fashion mainstay and now it’s moving into home decor trend territory. Case in point: this luxurious throw that adds a layer of sumptuous softness to any couch, bed or chair (West Elm, $95 to $119). Enjoy the warmth and softness of real fur, minus the guilt.

Snow globes

While they won’t physically warm you up, these adorable snow globes will make you feel snug and cozy knowing you’re inside, tucked away from the snow and sub-zero chill (West Elm, $25). Choose from a nutcracker, owl, bare tree or Santa – or collect them all so you have a stylishly snowy set. Line them up along your coffee table or spread them around your house for some winter-inspired decor.
