Flowers for Valentine’s Day

A bouquet of fresh flowers is one of the easiest ways to pretty up your home, and what better excuse than Valentine’s Day? Forget boring roses, shake things up and experiment with these beautiful blooms.

You hear Valentine’s Day, you think roses. But why not throw traditions aside and explore the many other flowers that are on offer at this time of year. Summer is the perfect time to trawl through your own garden, your neighbour’s patch or the local nursery or florist for some great bunches to add to your home. Throw a bouquet on the Valentine’s Day dinner table or in the living room to bring a little romance to the space. We’re blessed to have an abundance of blooms readily available in Australia right now, so don’t settle for the standard red rose — fill your home with all shades of colour and shapes of petal!

  • Long-lasting lilies not only look gorgeous, but they’ll fill your home with a beautiful fragrance too. Choose a big bunch of light pink coloured blooms and keep them on the table as the perfect Valentine’s Day centrepiece.
  • What says summer more than a frangipani flower? Fill a small vase with these little blooms; they look especially great on a wooden outdoor table.
  • Birds of paradise look dazzling in tall, sturdy vases in one corner of the room. Give your home a tropical vibe and introduce a touch of orange and blue to the decor.
  • Gardenias give off a gorgeous scent and will pretty up any table. Cluster a few of these white flowers in a short vase and pop them on a bedside table or in the bathroom. Their dainty appearance will help soften up a stark space and they’re great in places like the home entertainment area.
  • A small branch of bougainvillea will bring some brilliant colour to a white or neutral-coloured space. Pop your picks in the centre of the table for a bright pink centrepiece on Valentine’s Day.
  • Super feminine and soft, hydrangeas are great for bringing some romantic mauve into your home on Feb. 14. They’re a beautiful choice for Valentine’s Day with their flowing bunches of blooms and soft colour.
  • Gerberas are the eternally cheerful flower. Collect a bunch of different colours and tie the stalks together with a piece of string for a cute Valentine’s Day gift for a friend. Store them in a tall glass vase somewhere highly visible — you’re guaranteed to smile every time you look at them!
  • Beautiful purple agapanthus are hardy plants found in gardens across Australia. You might even be able to pick some from your garden or your neighbour’s and save your pennies.
  • The ginger family of plants are both pretty and practical, but the ornamental variety are ideal to bring a lush, tropical look to your home. Choose from white, pink or mauve flowers.
