Break out your hankies, it’s about to get heavy. The first trailer for Tom Hooper’s film adaptation of Les Miserables has been released. And like the title implies, its characters are truly miserable.
Anne Hathaway‘s smooth voice narrates the first trailer for Les Miserables. The feature is based on the popular French novel by Victor Hugo, which was published in 1862.
This version of Miserables features an all-star cast led by Hathaway, Hugh Jackman and Russell Crowe. Hathaway plays the down-on-her-luck Fantine, a former beauty who’s forced into a life of hardship. She’s a young unwed mother who does the unthinkable to provide for her child.

Fantine’s story is heartbreaking, so it’s no wonder they used her as trailer bait. Her somber rendition of “I Dreamed a Dream” expresses the turmoil of not only her life but those around her. Les Mis isn’t an upbeat musical. It’s down, dirty and real.
Jackman’s character Jean Valjean has his own share of bad luck. After serving 19 years in prison (for stealing bread and multiple attempts to escape), he desperately tries to start over. He befriends Fantine and wants to reunite her with her estranged daughter Cosette.

Unfortunately, the ruthless Inspector Javert (Crowe) has it in for both Valjean and Fantine. Especially Valjean, with whom he shares a sordid past. All of the actors are in top form, and put their own spin on these well-known characters. We can’t wait to see the finished product on the big screen!
