Styling your home does not have to cost the earth. As a pre-sale property stylist and home stager, I am always making decorating decisions based on what will create the biggest impact at the smallest cost. You can absolutely achieve an individual and welcoming look even on a modest budget. Here are some of my top tips for styling your space on a shoestring budget.
Decorating doesn’t have to cost a fortune!
Have a vision!
One sure way to overspend on your already limited budget is to start decorating without a vision or an end in mind. To avoid this, have a plan of what needs to be done and how you want the space to end up looking and feeling. A vision wall, Pinterest Board or scrapbook are perfect ways to achieve this. As you find inspiring images or products that you like, place them together on the board or in the book and eventually you will start to notice a theme or trend in your images. You can then curate the images and refine what you want in the space and how you want to use it. Having this plan from the beginning will help you avoid unnecessary purchases and costly changes of heart.
Take a fresh look
Many of us who like interiors have a reasonable amount of homewares in our houses. In many cases, if you take a look at your furniture and decor items with fresh eyes you can often repurpose, up-cycle or simply reuse items that you already own in the same or a different space. To begin, simply empty all the home decor items from half or all of your home into one area. Include cushions, throws, art, candles, lamps and accessories. If possible, leave it there for a day or two to help you distance yourself from the memories of where everything usually lives. Set aside some time a couple of days later to redecorate the spaces of your home from the stack of products and make sure you push yourself to think outside the box. This can also be done for items of furniture. At the end of this process, consider selling any leftover items that cannot be reused to generate funds for new items you may want to buy for your new-look space.
Resurface it
Does your room contain some pieces that are highly functional but simply lack the “wow” factor’? Before you throw them out, ask yourself: Can I paint it, add wallpaper or wrap it in fabric? These are three options that can often breathe new life into tired pieces, so give it a go!
Have a hero
You can use items and accessories from a variety of price points which will still have impact in your room. By using no more than one or two hero pieces in the room, you can then save money on the accessories.
Creating a comfortable and inviting home does not have to cost the Earth and it is a process that can be very fun to be involved with. Start by following these four tips and you will be surprised at what you can achieve on a shoestring.
