Bathroom updates

Check out these bathroom updates that got great results!

Bathrooms often get the short end of the stick when it comes to home updates. We spend the big bucks in the kitchen and living areas and shut the door on the bathroom. With a little attention, though, your bathroom can become a gorgeous retreat. Spend some time and elbow grease, and you’ll end up with a room you feel good about being in, not a place you rush to get out of in the morning.

We’ve scoured the blogosphere for some of our favorite bathroom updates, and our best finds are below. Whether you’re looking for an update that’s small but effective or you’re ready to do a total overhaul, you’re sure to find something that inspires.

Brighten it up

You don’t need rubber duckies and cartoony soap dispensers to create a bathroom space your kids will love. Lindsey over at The Pleated Poppy had a beautiful kids’ bathroom to begin with, but the blah colors just weren’t doing it for her. Her simple update involved a bright coat of paint and some bold accessories, and her finished product is fabulous. The bright yellow paint brings excitement to the room, and the accessories add the just the right amount of color and whimsy. The exchange of a white shower curtain for a grey and white chevron pattern made a big impact, along with the addition of some kid-friendly artwork.

Adding woodwork

A little woodwork goes a long way, but Diane from In My Own Style took it to the limit. She transformed a boring purple bathroom to a room that’s full of character and style. To get the look, Diane added a board and batten treatment to the walls, and she went a lot higher than most people do to give the room her own style. She added wood trim around the mirrors, molding over the window and beadboard and molding to cover the front of the bathtub. The result was a room that looks like a carpenter’s dream, and she did it all herself!

Cabinet re-do

We all want to save as much cash as possible when taking on a project, and some of the biggest expenses in the bathroom involve the cabinet and countertop. Amy over at The Idea Room saved big bucks by repainting her old cabinet and replacing the old, tired counter with a beautiful new one. Her outdated cabinets were still in good shape, so a little sanding, some black paint and new hardware gave them a sleek new look. Her bathroom is now modern, stylish and a room she’s proud to show off.

Updated storage

Melissa over at 320 Sycamore had plenty of storage in her bathroom, but it was all super outdated. She did a total bathroom overhaul, with the biggest impact coming from the removal of an old storage cabinet above the toilet. In its place, she installed a few white shelves, and filled the open shelving with a mix of baskets for storage and accessories for décor. The result is a stylish and functional space that shows Melissa’s style, and works great for her family.

Simple changes

Sometimes, it just takes a simple change to make a big impact. Vanessa from When Decades Collide did just that. Over a weekend, she transformed her guest bathroom with a few easy changes. After adding a coat of paint and removing an aged glass door, she added a new shower curtain, throw rug and some fab accessories. The result is an updated bathroom that’s much more stylish than the one she started with, all for minimal impact on her wallet.

You can save a lot of money by taking on a bathroom remodel yourself, but stick to the professionals when it comes to plumbing. Fixing a plumbing mistake can cost more than the rest of the project!
