A tire garden will work similarly to a raised bed garden, since the tire is raised from the level ground and filled with soil for planting. You can use single tires for flower gardens, squash and melons, or stack a few tires to make deep containers for tomatoes and potatoes to root.

No modifications are necessary to get your tire ready for planting, but you will want to thoroughly wash the inside and outside. If you want, you can remove the sidewall with a utility knife to make a larger planting space. When you’re ready to fill it with soil, use a soil intended for container gardening–it will conserve moisture better than traditional garden soil.

As mentioned above, you can paint the exterior of your tire gardens to make them look less like tires and more like gardens. You can also cut out a pattern on the tire to give it even more visual appeal, for example, trim and fold the tire’s sidewall to make it look like a flower blossom.
