In-home allergy relief tips and tricks

Dust. Dirt. Grime. Allergy causing agents exist in every home. To stave off itchy skin, follow a few of these home allergen busting tips and tricks.

Keep your space clean

Cleaning your space “once and awhile” won’t do if you’re trying to keep it free of dust and mould. Opt for general tidying every day and every week, get the family involved in a big clean up.

Reach for fragrance-free products

A product that smells good may not be good for your health even recent research says homes should be freshened in all-natural ways. So ditch cleaning products that have an artificial scent. Reach for natural, fragrance-free products. It may also be smart to invest in a natural, non-allergenic treatment for hard surfaces to prevent the spread of mould or bacteria.

Clean fans and air vents

These filters, usually found in the bathroom and kitchen, trap all sorts of dust, dirt and grime whenever you flip them on, so it’s important to clean them frequently. If you don’t, their dust traps will fill and, eventually, when you use the devices, you’ll end up re-circulating the germs through your home.

Use a DE-humidifier

Germs breed in damp, cool conditions, so always ensure you have a de-humidifier going or, at least, one that works. This will ensure surfaces that are prone to mould [in the basement, near windows and doors] stay dry so it can’t grow or spread. If you notice any cracks when doing your seasonal home walk-through, be sure to fill them so moisture can’t seep into the walls of your space.

Vacuum away

Brooms and mops are great for getting up the dirt and germs you can see, but vacuum cleaners are even better. That’s because their suction action gets up stuff that you might not be able to notice with the naked eye, including dust mites that are hiding within floorboards, baseboards or in pillows and cushions.

Change air filters

As one of the main air circulation sources for your home, air conditioner and furnace filters can become clogged with dust and dirt. That’s especially true if you’re apt to sleep with your doors and windows closed. So change the filters once every three months — at least. If your home appears to be dustier than usual, it may also be a good idea to invest in a professional duct cleaning service [this will bust any dust or dirt that’s hiding within your home’s heating or cooling system].
