Australia’s top 5 Beaches

The pristine beaches that fringe the Australian coastline are world-renowned, with more than 7,000 separate beaches located down under. We rank the top five stretches of sand throughout Australia to show you exactly where you need to park your brolly and beach towel this summer! SheKnows Australian picks for Australian top five beaches!

Surfers Paradise, Queensland

A long-standing favourite with domestic and international tourists, Surfers Paradise is exactly what it sounds like — paradise for surfers! If you want sunshine, sand, surf and a great atmosphere, then look no further than this jewel on Queensland’s Gold Coast. As well as offering big waves and warm water virtually all year round, Surfers Paradise is a definite party spot, so for those who are looking to mix it up off the beach as well, Surfers Paradise is the beach for you.

There are plenty of other local beaches throughout the Gold Coast that are more suitable if you’re seeking more family friendly fare, including Burleigh, Coolangatta, Kirra and Greenmount.

Cable Beach, WA

Arguably one of the best beaches in the world, Cable Beach is a stunning beach that stretches for more than 20km. Cable Beach is situated near Broome, which is located in the Kimberley region of WA, around 2200 km north of Perth.

The coastline that fringes this region is so big that you’ll never be forced to share your beach adventures with too many others, as it’s relatively easy to locate your own private pocket of secluded sand. This beach’s sun-kissed shoreline is comprised of pure, white sand and clear waters, and it has quirky features too: for a truly unique activity, why not take a seaside camel ride in Cable Beach during sunset?

Bondi Beach, NSW

Bondi Beach isn’t the biggest stretch of sand in Australia, but what it lacks in size it makes up for in personality! Situated around 7km east of Sydney’s CBD, Bondi Beach is the place to be seen, with buff, bronzed bikini-clad babes lining the one-kilometre length of beach from sunrise to sunset.

On a beautiful summer’s day you will battle the crowds that flock to Bondi Beach, but that’s part of the fun of visiting one of Australia’s most beautiful beaches! After you’ve cooled off in the ocean, you can pop into one of the many bars, cafés and restaurants that line the shore, or enjoy shopping in the local boutiques and stores. When you’re in the water, however, just be sure to watch out for the rip current as it can be deadly; lifeguards are always on duty, but it pays to be vigilant.

Whitehaven Beach, Whitsunday Islands, Queensland

Whitehaven is the jewel of the crown in the Whitsunday Islands, a collection of more than 70 idyllic islands situated off the coast of north Queensland. Whitehaven is a secluded beach located on a deserted island in the Whitsundays, accessible by boat Airlie Beach, Shute Harbour and Hamilton Island.

Around 6km in length, this stunning stretch of sand was named Queensland’s Cleanest Beach in “Keep Australia Beautiful’s 2008 Clean Beach Challenge State Awards”, and in July 2010, it was named the top “Eco Friendly Beach” in the world by CNN.com.

In Whitehaven, the sand is whiter than snow and the water is crystal clear, and locals are determined to keep it that way: dogs are not permitted on the beach, and cigarette smoking is prohibited.

Cottesloe Beach, WA

Situated around 15 minutes drive from Perth, Cottesloe Beach is a popular beach with locals and tourists alike. This long, wide beach is an ideal locale to unwind in the sun, go surfing, swim and engage in beach activities. Cottesloe Beach is one of the Perth’s most popular haunts, as the beach is lined with a bustling boulevard of cafes and pubs — Cottesloe is famous for its Sunday Sessions, where the beachfront pubs are throbbing with live music, food and Sunday afternoon crowds.
