The birds & the bees: Springtime animal crafts

Kids love to get outside when the weather turns warm. Let’s face it, though — rainy days happen, especially in the spring. Chase away the rainy day blues with these fun spring animal crafts.

Cotton ball lamb

This soft and fuzzy little lamb is the perfect project for a toddler. The cotton balls are easy for small hands to grasp, and they stick to the glue pretty easily.

What you’ll need:

• Paper plate
• White glue
• Cotton balls
• Black construction paper
• Scissors
• Googly eye

Instructions:

1. Cover the paper plate in glue and let your toddler get to work with the cotton balls. Cover the entire plate in cotton balls to create the lamb’s fuzzy wool coat.
2. Cut a head, ear and two feet from construction paper. Cut a circle for the head, a small oval for the ear and two small ovals for the feet. Turn the paper plate over and glue the head in place on the back of the plate, letting most of it stick out over the side so you can see it when the plate is turned over. Glue the ear onto the head and the two feet to the bottom of the plate, letting them hang over the edge as well.
3. Let your toddler place the googly eye on the lamb. The lamb’s head will appear in profile, so you’ll only need one eye.

Easter egg bunny

Turn your Easter eggs into cute little Easter bunnies with just a few crafting supplies.

What you’ll need:

• Hard boiled eggs, dyed
• Construction paper to match eggs
• Scissors
• Two googly eyes
• Two white pom poms
• One pink pom pom
• Glue
• Black marker

Instructions:

1. Cut two bunny ears out of construction paper and glue them to the top of your egg on the back side.
2. Turn your egg around to face the front and glue the two googly eyes to the egg to make the bunny’s eyes.
3. Just under the eyes, glue the one pink pom pom for the bunny’s nose. Glue the two white pom poms under the nose to form the cheeks.
4. Draw a mouth with the black marker.
5. Set the bunny in a basket filled with plastic or paper grass.

TP Bumble bee

It’s not spring without a few bumble bees. These bees you create from toilet paper rolls are easy (and fun!) to make. Punch a hole in the back of the finished product and tie a string to it for a bee you can fly around your backyard.

What you’ll need:

• Toilet paper roll
• Black and yellow paint
• Paint brush
• White construction paper
• Scissors
• Two googly eyes
• Black marker
• Glue

Instructions:

1. Paint the entire toilet paper roll yellow. Let it dry, and then add black stripes. Leave the top two inches of the roll yellow for the bee’s face.
2. Glue the two googly eyes on the bee’s face and draw the mouth on with a black marker.
3. Cut two wings out of white construction paper. Glue them to the back of the bumble bee or cut slits in the toilet paper and slide the wings through the slits.
