A Midwestern butter-carving contest melts out of control when one desperate housewife conspires to lie, cheat on her husband, and humiliate an orphan in order to win. Jennifer Garner plays a conniving, ruthless b**** – but can she pull off a bad-girl role and truly become the belle of the butter ball?
Perfect for women with blind ambition
Laura Pickler (Jennifer Garner) is married to Bob (Ty Burrell), the reigning butter-carving champion. His sculptures include amazing tableaus that depict Da Vinci’s “Last Supper” and a scene from Steven Spielberg’s Schindler’s List. He’s so good in fact, the contest committee asks him to retire so others may have their day in the milky-yellow light.
Laura enjoys the status and fame she receives as wife of the butter champ, however, and when she fails to bully the committee into letting her husband compete, she does what any ambitious social climber would do — she enters the contest herself.
With the help of her butter-master-husband, Laura’s a shoo-in. But soon, she finds out she has some stiff competition from a child named Destiny (Yara Shahidi), an African-American orphan with natural artistic talent and a deep need to express herself.
Laura’s quest to become butter queen gets even more complicated when she discovers her husband is having an affair with a stripper named Brooke (Olivia Wilde), who tries to extort money from Bob when he breaks off the affair. Brooke now has her own plans to take revenge on the Picklers and decides to enter the butter-carving contest to spite them.
While the competition-centered plot is predictable, the characters are dastardly, unscrupulous, and willing to risk all in this hilariously high-staked competition. It is delicious to watch the lovely Jennifer Garner bare her teeth as a hot-buttered b****.
Olivia Wilde plays the white-trash stripper like a sharp-edged knife that will have you giggling through the whole movie. Hugh Jackman surprises as Laura’s douche bag ex and will have you loving to hate him.
