When leaves start to fall, there’s a renewed sense of earthiness. Crisp air meets cooler temperatures. It’s no surprise that our homes feel the need for renewal as well. Send off summer with these gorgeous fall tones that will bring your home into the next season.
Jewels and spice make everything nice
Traditional fall temperatures include pumpkin orange, mustard, maroon, deep greens and more, which are considered “spice” colors, according to HGTV host and interior designer Taniya Nayak. Taking inspiration from your spice cabinet, blend those colors with jewel tones for a rich, sophisticated pop of color. “Mixing and matching jewel and spice tones such as ruby, amber, saffron, ochre and turmeric is a fantastic fall color palette and a win every time,” Nayak says. Splash neutral spice tones — like Sherwin-Williams’ Cut the Mustard (price varies at Sherwin-Williams locations) — on your walls, and then finish with furniture of saffron and sapphire tones for a quirky, earthy look.
Vintage meets modern
Fall 2012’s color palette is filled with vintage-inspired, dusty colors that you’d see at grandma’s house. But hold it right there, modern woman. Before you wave these colors off, consider mixing them with bold, deep colors that bring the look into the 21st century. Mix smoky rose walls, like those painted with Glidden Premium in Deep Dusty Rose ($15 at Home Depot), with decor accents of deep brown and aquamarine. It’s a feminine, homey look that doesn’t venture into the realm of girly.
Colored neutrals
It would be easy to feel the pressure to change your most lived in rooms from season to season, but Nayak says there’s no need. Having colored neutrals on hand, like her current favorite, a pale lime green called chartreuse green, can help you carry your room accents from one season to the next. “In the summer I would accent with crisp white and yellow, but come fall, [chartreuse green] looks great with deep plum, teal and magenta.” Incorporate this look into your favorite living space without doing serious damage to your wallet by swapping out pillows from season to season. Add teal and plum pillows to your chartreuse green collection, and then add a magenta throw and coffee table accents that bring all of the colors together.
Cool and warm
Let your fall home reflect the feel of the season! Cool fall temperatures meet warm drinks and feelings. Painting your walls a titanium silver might make your home look cold, but adding in floral accents of tangerine, deep lavender and cerulean adds a touch of softness to an overall hard look. Mix accents of jewel tones, including suede pillows, knit throws and more for an ornate feel.
