The South is known for their fried food, deep southern drawls and incredible hospitality — which is why some of the best bed-and-breakfast in the country rest on Southern soil. If you’re looking for a truly relaxing weekend at a place that feels like your mama’s house, stop by one of these truly incredible Southern B&Bs.
You won’t find any squeaky beds, dated wallpaper or weird unicorn statues in any of these five-star bed-and-breakfasts. Highly rated by visitors and world-renowned experts (like the folks at Southern Living and Food & Wine), you know the four-poster sleigh beds will be comfortable and the four-course breakfasts outstanding at each of these inns. Just past the Mason Dixon and all the way down to Alabama, you’ll never want to leave these incredible B&Bs!
Goodstone Inn & Restaurant — Middleburg, Virginia
The curvy, tree lined drive up to the stunning 265-acre Goodstone Inn & Restaurant is incredible, but it’s nothing compared to the stunning property itself. Situated in Virginia’s wine and horse country, this inn (whose lobby was once a horse stable) reminds you of a visit to those really rich, older relatives you have. The lobby is cozy, but elegant with a warm fireplace and old-school bar. Each of the inn’s 18 rooms are horse themed and decorated with a very vintage, antique vibe. We recently stayed in the Stallion room, which is right next to the lobby. The one bedroom suite has a beautiful four-poster bed, view of the countryside and a large bathroom with sitting area. Dinner may be pricy (a four course meal for two can set you back hundreds), but every bite is worth it. We’d advise you to not skip the breakfast — we couldn’t get enough of the blueberry pancakes with thick, salty bacon. Rooms start at $500 per night.
The Reynolds Mansion — Asheville, North Carolina
Located in one of the country’s coolest (and most beautiful cities), The Reynolds Mansion in Asheville, North Carolina was built in 1847 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This stunning mansion, which was once a private home during the Pre-Civil War era, overlooks the picturesque Reynolds Mountains. The home is over 3,000 square feet and has an incredible 12 fireplaces. There are eight rooms in the main home, three carriage house suites and a private cottage overlooking the pool. In addition to a full breakfast, the mansion also has coffee bars on each floor — giving you access to a warm cup of joe whenever you may need it. Rooms start at $199 per night.
Fort Conde Inn — Mobile, Alabama
Mobile, Alabama may not be on your “must visit” list right now, but we guarantee that’ll change once you take a peek at the beautiful, AAA Four Diamond awarded Fort Conde Inn. This stunning boutique property was built in 1836 and is one of Mobile’s oldest historic residences. The inn sits next to a cluster of other historic buildings in Fort Conde Village, which are undergoing a series of renovations and restorations. The Inn, a hot spot for weddings and events, has everything you’d expect from a luxurious mansion — white washed balconies, 12-foot ceilings and crystal chandeliers. There are 15 rooms, including four luxury rooms, four carriage house suites, three royal suites and two cottages. We’d recommend a stay in the exquisite Antunez King Suite, which has two fireplaces and 300-thread count sheets. Rooms start at $249 per night.
Zero George Street — Charleston, South Carolina
You can’t throw a rock in downtown Charleston without hitting at least four historic bed-and-breakfasts. So what makes the Zero George on George Street any different than the rest? They not only pay homage to the rich and extravagant history of Charleston, they also add just the right amount of modernity to make you feel at home. There are only five rooms, which make a stay at this boutique hotel feel more like a stay at a relative’s home — and less like a stay at a regular hotel or B&B. The Veranda King, which is the inn’s largest room, has a furnished, Italian-style piazza overlooking the beautiful city and a hand-laid marble bathroom. Located just a few blocks from the Battery, City Market and downtown, it’s close to the hustle and bustle while still offering quite a bit of serenity. Rooms start at $299 per night.
