Texas’ Wendy Davis inadvertently started a new shoe fashion trend during her marathon filibuster.
Move over, Kate Middleton: Texas state senator Wendy Davis is now a fashion trendsetter.
The lawmaker made headlines last week when she stood for nearly 13 hours — without sitting, eating or drinking — to filibuster against a proposed abortion limits bill.
And she did it thanks to, in part, the red and green Mizuno Women’s Wave Rider 16 running shoes she sported with her skirt and jacket set. The exposure sent the $115 Mizunos to Amazon’s best-seller list.
“Mizuno was surprised by the sudden spotlight focused on our flagship running shoe, the Wave Rider, earlier this week when Wendy Davis wore a pair during her filibuster in Texas,” the company said in a statement posted to its website.
“We are proud of the running shoes we develop for our customers and know the Wave Rider’s design is able to provide the comfort and cushioning needed for any ‘endurance’ event, whether it’s a 5K, a marathon or 10+ hour filibuster. We love seeing our running shoes on all consumers regardless of their political affiliation or beliefs.”
Of course, the best part of the shoes’ popularity is the barrage of tongue-in-cheek reviews posted on Amazon that respond to Davis’ story.
“An essential tool for running down the clock in a state 773 miles wide and 790 miles long!” one reviewer wrote. “These shoes are perfect for those days when you must spend 13+ hours standing, not lean on your desk or take any breaks — even for meals or to use the bathroom.”
“I bought them in pink with green stripe. I will put them on my feet when I need to run far,” added another. “When I am tired, I will ask myself: WWWD?! Then I will keep running.”
