The summer season is coming to a close, and soon it will be time to update your home’s decor for fall. This transition doesn’t have to cost a lot or require much effort. There are several quick and inexpensive ways to give your home a look that’s warm, elegant and autumn-ready.
For specific ideas on how to decorate for the upcoming fall season, check out the following tips.
Bringing the outdoors in
Erica Lugbill, owner of Lugbill Designs, explains that fall decor doesn’t have to consist of pumpkin-themed items or accessories with leaves plastered all over them. “I love using glass lanterns and vases year-round, and when fall comes around I fill them with dark green moss and branches. This creates an elegant fall theme without going over the top,” she explains.
Another way to easily and affordably transition your home from summer to fall is to decorate with fresh flowers. Kim Lewis, a celebrity interior designer, recommends visiting farmers’ markets and purchasing bundles of orange flowers. She says, “Orange is a favorite color this year, so what better time to sprinkle it through your home than autumn?”
Another decorating hint Lewis shares is to avoid mixing different types of flowers in a single arrangement. She says, “Get one species of flower in one color and keep your arrangements simple and monochromatic.”
Updating bedding and pillows
Christopher Grubb, President of Arch-Interiors Design Group Inc., recommends covering your bed with a comforter that features traditional fall colors. “Mixed with pillows and a throw in fall colors, it will give the effect of a complete makeover,” he explains. If you can’t spring for a new comforter or throw, Grubb suggests that you at least switch out your sheets. “A fresh, new sheet in fall colors like pumpkin, hunter green, chocolate brown or a rich deep gold reminds you every time you go to bed fall is in the air!”
Lugbill says “My favorite way to get the home ready for fall is to switch out my accent pillows. I have several pillows that are chocolate brown, navy and pumpkin orange that are simple and graphic and that prepare my home for the fall season.”
Styling the dinner table
Aimee Beatty, Pier 1 Imports’ in-house stylist, says, “By changing your dinnerware and introducing pieces with fall colors, you can make a huge impact and completely change the mood of the room. If you have existing white or solid plates, layer in something from Pier 1’s Bellanina collection or add brocade-detailed placemats and napkins in harvest fall colors to create a cozy, fall dining area.”
Decorating with fall colors and patterns
Most people associate shades of brown, orange and yellow with fall, but there are plenty of other colors and patterns that can evoke a sense of the season. According to Beatty, “Peacock hues warmed with deep bronze and golds are the perfect colors for fall.”
In addition to these colors, Lewis says that plaid is making a comeback this season. To incorporate this trend into your home’s decor, she recommends stacking plaid flannel throws on your sofa.
Getting your backyard fall-ready
As you’re transitioning the interior decor of your home from summer to fall, don’t forget to give your backyard some attention. Lewis recommends getting a firepit for your patio and hanging some string lights. “As the summer nights start cooling down to the fall season, there’s no better place to hang out than your own backyard! Clear globe string lights add ambient lighting, while the fire crackling calls for relaxation,” she explains.
