To ensure you’re on top of the latest decor trends, Fabulous Living turned to design experts and asked what colors, patterns and styles will be particularly popular in 2013. Based on their feedback, here are a few of the top trends you can expect to see influencing the look of homes and accessories in the new year.
Minimalism
As Ikea’s green living expert and a brand ambassador for Mythic Paint, Cathy Hobbs is tuned into what’s hot and what’s not in home decor. For 2013, she suggests that minimalism decorating will make a comeback. “With so many people living with less, I am seeing a trend toward what I call ‘living with your favorite things.’ Instead of crowding a home or space with an overload of color, texture and furniture, I think the trend will be toward simplicity,” she explains.
Emerald green decor
Emerald green increasingly will appear in home decor and accessories throughout 2013. According to Lana Zepponi, an interior designer and the director of services to the trade at Chestnut Hall in Germantown, Tennessee, “This color was all over 2012 fall market. It’s Pantone’s color of the year and was chosen because green is a color for prosperity, hope, optimism and a desire to move forward from challenging economic times. It also translates well to fashion and jewelry design. Expect to see emerald green fabrics, paints and the return of malachite.”
Brighter color palettes
Emerald green isn’t the only color that will be making a splash in home decor and accessories in the new year. Interior designer Patti Johnson anticipates a shift away from the grays and neutrals that were popular the past several years into brighter color palettes. She explains, “This could be as simple as introducing brightly colored accents in the new wave of greens and plums to coordinate with neutrals. Many clients have or are currently in the process of the neutrals, but a trend toward reclaimed furnishings painted in a bright primary or pastel color is extremely popular for today’s green approach to living with what one has, recycling or upcycling as termed by industry insiders.”
Greek key designs
Another decor trend Zepponi anticipates is for the Greek key to increasingly appear in various designs. “This clean, decorative embellishment is both modern and as classic as it can be. It’s being used in design from fabric patterns and trims to the shapes used for case good pieces, like table legs and drawer handles,” she explains.
Vintage looks
Many design experts expect vintage styles to influence home decor in the new year. Hobbs says, “I am seeing both fashion and home decor pay homage to the 1930s and ’40s with lots of mirror on mirror, shag, lamb’s wool and even unexpected materials like patent leather along with lacquer.”
