Create pretty Dutch braids

Embracing your inner warrior princess is simple when you learn the technique of Dutch braids! Follow this step-by-step tutorial to create an easy braided hairstyle that’s appropriate for work and play.

What you’ll need:

  • A brush
  • A wide-toothed comb
  • Regular hair ties
  • Decorative hair ties (we used some from Jolie USA)

Step 1: Prepare your mane

Gently brush out your locks. If desired, add a spritz of leave-in conditioner to tame flyaway hairs. Next, take the wide-toothed comb and part your hair. Don’t worry about whether you have a middle or side part — this braid will work just fine with either one. However, as the part approaches the back of your head, be sure to angle it toward the center of your skull. In the end, you will want to have a straight part down the back of your head.

Step 2: Begin the braid

Separate three strands of hair. As you begin to cross the strands, make sure that they are going underneath each other.

Step 3: The long and winding road

Pull the strands tightly toward your scalp and continue to braid. Each time you cross the strands, be sure to gather a little more hair and add it to the strand. That way, your braid will hug your scalp and it will naturally become thicker as you work your way down.

Continue to weave the strands until you run out of hair. Secure the braid with a regular hair tie and repeat on the other half of your head.

Step 4: Add pizazz

Using a decorative hair tie, secure the braids together at the base of your neck. Bind the middle with another fun hair tie, then remove the regular hair ties from the bottom and do the same for the base of the braid.

Try out various hair elastics for a different look. (We used the Jolie USA pony holders.) Have fun experimenting!
