Whether you’re looking to get fancy schmancy for a big event or are just trying to get your mane off your neck on a hot day, having a few simple up dos up your sleeve is a good idea. Here are some of our favorite simple up dos. All you’ll need are a comb, a brush, a hair elastic, some bobbypins and five minutes.
Dressed up ponytail
The ponytail is the Chanel suit of up dos. It’s flattering on everyone, it will never go out of style, and there are about a million ways to style it. Here are a few ideas for making a ponytail feel a bit more formal:
- Wrap a small section of hair from the ponytail around the hair elastic and pin it below the ponytail for a clean, finished look.
- Add a little volume to your ponytail by teasing the hair at the crown of your head before securing your locks into a low ponytail.
- Shift your ponytail to the side of your head. Position the ponytail low, close to your neck, to keep the look sophisticated.

Double bun
The bun is another classic up do that could use some sprucing up, and we have just the idea. We call it the “double bun.” Start by separating your hair into two ponytails — one at the crown of your head and one at the nape of your neck. (Depending on the length and thickness of your hair, you may have to bring these ponytails closer together.) Wrap the top ponytail around the elastic very loosely, so the bun is full. Pin ends securely around the elastic. Do the same with the bottom ponytail. Cover any obvious separation between the buns by fluffing out the buns or even redo-ing the ponytails to start a bit closer together. The final product should appear to be a swirly-looking figure-8 up do.
Messy mush
This is a casual look, but the truth is that, if you have the confidence, you could rock this look in the evening. Celebrities do the messy up do all the time on red carpets. Start as you would if you were making a low ponytail. On the last time through the elastic, pull your hair through only half way. This should leave a messy loop. Amplify the messiness and volume of your mush by pinning small sections of the loop and the free ends up and down. You can leave the front of your hair sleek or pull out some lose strands to bring the messy chic look 360.

While you technically don’t need anything more than the simple materials listed above for these looks, try adding a little mouse to dry hair before you style. It’ll make your locks super manageable and easy to shape. It will also help with the hold once your hair is in place. Enjoy these chic, simple looks, ladies!
