How to manage curly hair in dry weather

If you live in a dry climate, you may feel like the weather is draining the life out of your curly hair. If the dry weather is causing your hair to look dull and damaged, follow these simple tips to get it back into tiptop shape.

Eliminate alcohol-based products

Food labels aren’t the only ones you should be reading. Be sure to read the labels on your shampoo, conditioner and other haircare products. Avoid those products with alcohol in them — alcohol dries your hair, causing breakage.

Put down your blow dryer

As much as your think you can’t live without it, you can. Curly hair tends to be dry by nature – adding in dry weather plus a blow dryer is a recipe for hair disaster. Instead of blowing your hair straight every day, let your hair dry naturally and enjoy your curls. Despite what you may have heard, a low setting doesn’t eliminate blow dryer damage. When you turn down the heat, you end up blow drying your hair for a long period of time – which can cause even more damage than a quick blast on higher heat.

Seal in moisture with coconut oil

Right after conditioning your hair, it feels great. But then once you step outside, the dry air may zap the moisture right back out of it. Seal the moisture into your hair with a little bit of coconut oil. Put very small amount of the oil onto your hands and then run them through your hair from roots to tips. Pay special attention to the ends, where curly hair is generally the driest. Don’t use too much, or your hair will end up greasy and your curls will go limp.

Deep condition with honey

In dry weather, you should deep condition your curly hair weekly. Create a homemade hair treatment with 3 tablespoons of honey and 1 tablespoon of olive oil added to your regular conditioner. Apply thoroughly to hair and leave for 30 minutes. Rinse with warm water and style as usual. Honey is a natural humectant that forms a protective layer on your hair, helping to preserve moisture and prevent damage from elements.
