Katy Perry didn’t play around when it came to getting her skin ready for her new Vogue cover.
Katy Perry always looks amazing on magazine covers, but the “Part of Me” singer went all out to prepare for her new Vogue cover.
“I did a lot of my own prepping… I kind of went on a cleanse, I did a lot of stuff like vitamins and supplements, I changed my coffee to green tea, I didn’t drink alcohol for three months,” she told Jay Leno last week. “I was really in the zone — I just wanted to be glowing for that cover.”
She’s not kidding: The on-again girlfriend of John Mayer tweeted a photo of her vast vitamin collection in May.
We’re not so sure about taking all of those vitamins each day, but her regimen is obviously working for her!
Get healthy skin from the inside out
Perry went all out for her Vogue beauty cleanse, but we want to know what we can do to achieve our best-looking skin from the inside out. Nutritionist and The Virgin Diet author JJ Virgin has a few tips on bringing out your best glow with a few diet tweaks.
- Pay attention to your oil. Swap any processed oils for extra virgin olive oil or red palm oil.
- Don’t skimp on the greens. A diet full of fruits and veggies gives you the vitamins and minerals your skin needs.
“As you get older, your collagen breaks down, leading to wrinkles,” Virgin says. “Since your body requires vitamin C to synthesize collagen, you’ll want to get optimal amounts from fruits and vegetables like broccoli and berries.”
- Skip the sweets. Perry had the right idea by eliminating alcohol, since all the sugar wreaks havoc on the skin.
“Sugar attaches to collagen in a process called glycosylation. Scientists call these sticky proteins advanced glycolated end products, with the appropriate acronym AGEs, since in this case they age your skin,” Virgin says. “Learn to satisfy your sweet tooth with low-glycemic berries and other fruits, sweet potatoes and vanilla.”
- Don’t forget the protein. Make sure it comes from high-quality foods.
“High-quality protein like wild salmon and grass-fed beef offers optimal amounts of collagen-building amino acids like lysine and proline. Animal protein also contains zinc. A study in the International Journal of Dermatology found this mineral provides excellent antioxidant protection for healthy skin.”
- Drink plenty of water. Take your body weight in pounds, divide by 2, and drink that number of ounces of water.
“Proper hydration means you sweat more efficiently to keep your skin glowing and looking fabulous,” Virgin says.
