Lend a hand: Women’s organizations to donate to

There is still much work to be done toward ensuring gender equality and securing women‘s human rights throughout the world. There are hundreds of nonprofit organizations that focus on the empowerment, health and rights of women.

If you enjoy lending a hand to those in need and have an interest in helping organizations that focus on women, here are some nonprofits that have strong records in fighting for women.

YWCA USA

The Young Women’s Christian Association (YWCA) is dedicated to eliminating racism and empowering women. For more than 150 years, the organization has focused on issues such as women’s health, domestic violence prevention, women’s rights and economic empowerment.

AAUW

The American Association of University Women (AAUW) promotes equity and education for all women and girls. Issues at the forefront of their mission include the attacks on women’s health, gender equity programs at universities and fair pay in the workplace.

Becky Lee Women’s Support Fund

A smaller organization in Washington, D.C., the Becky Lee Women’s Support Fund seeks support for smaller domestic violence organizations — ones that often are at the forefront of the fight against domestic violence. In addition to helping battered women, the nonprofit also runs several programs aimed toward young girls and men.

National Women’s History Museum

The National Women’s History Museum is a nonpartisan, nonprofit educational institution dedicated to preserving, interpreting and celebrating the historic contributions of women. The organization’s goal is to integrate this rich heritage into our nation’s culture and history.

Institute for Economic Empowerment of Women

The Institute for Economic Empowerment of Women has the mission of empowering female business owners — socially, economically and politically. One of the organization’s initiatives, Peace Through Business, empowers woman entrepreneurs in Afghanistan and Rwanda through training and mentoring in the United States.

Go Red for Women

Heart disease is the No. 1 killer of women and is more deadly than all forms of cancer, according to the American Heart Association. The Go Red for Women campaign spreads awareness about this deadly epidemic sweeping America, with donations going toward heart disease research, education and advocacy on the local and national levels.
