The rectangle-shape body might be a hot commodity in the fashion world for runways and photo shoots, but it’s not the easiest to dress for an everyday woman. Very skinny women with no curves also fall into this body category. Women with rectangle bodies often hear that they have boyish figures, so the goal is to stay feminine with your fashion choices.
The art of illusion
Tina Higgins, a fashion and image stylist, suggests adding layers and embellishment — accentuating instead of downplaying. “The idea is to create the appearance of curves. V-necks and scooped necklines, when paired with a cinched waist or waist-hugging fabrics — create the V-shaped illusion. Capped sleeves and sleeveless tops also give the appearance of wider shoulders and a smaller waist.” Higgins adds, “Wrap tops, button-downs and loose-flowing tops with gathered waists are nice complements for this body shape.”
Pattern play
Indulge your playful side and pick fun patterns. Florals and polka dots are hot this fall and work great on rectangle bodies. Stripes can, too, as long as they are not too wide. Thin pinstripes are always en vogue.
