How to protect your hair from the winter weather

Cold winter weather and harsh indoor heating can zap the life out of your hair. Follow these tips, tricks and product suggestions to protect and nourish your hair this winter.

Start with a moisturizing shampoo

Look for a moisturizing shampoo to hydrate your hair. Try Samy Moisture Plus Vitamins & Proteins Hydrating Shampoo or Renpure Organics My Pretty Hair is Parched! Moisturizing Shampoo. They are both very affordable and available at most drugstores. Washing your hair every day can strip it of moisture and natural oils. Try to wash your hair every other day in the wintertime. You can still condition each day to help keep your hair hydrated and healthy.

Use a deep conditioning treatment

Head to the salon for a professional deep conditioning treatment every month. It will help restore your hair’s luster. In between salon treatments, use Shu Uemura Moisture Velvet Nourishing Treatment with camellia oil once a week or create a homemade conditioner with products from your own kitchen.

Try a hair mask

Hair masks can also fortify and rejuvenate your hair. Oribe Signature Moisture Masque is a deep-hydrating hair mask that repairs and protects your hair, delivering super soft results. For color-treated hair, add a color glaze to your beauty routine. John Frieda Clear Shine Luminous Glaze makes your hair super shiny and the color vibrant.

Avoid the freeze

When it’s freezing outside, you must dry your hair before going out. If you go outside with wet hair, you’ll soon have frozen locks, which means split ends and breakage. Use heat-protecting products such as Paul Mitchell SoftStyle Heat Seal Thermal Protection and Style Spray or Crack: A Habit Forming Hair Fix before you blow dry or flat iron your hair. Better yet, wash your hair at night and let it air dry to avoid heated styling tools altogether.

Cover up

Hats can help save your hair from the winter weather, too. Cover up when you go outside to avoid damage from freezing temperatures and wind. Look for hats, scarves and headwear in soft fabrics that won’t snag or pull hair. Much of your body heat can escape from your head, so covering up will not only help protect your hair but it’ll keep your whole body warm.
